2006 National Centrist
Meeting
The Centrist Coalition participated in the first
National Centrist Meeting, held on May 6, 2006 in the Teddy Roosevelt Room
in the TR Birthplace Home in New York City.
We discussed both the
overall strategic direction of the centrist movement and how we can come
together in a unified effort at organizing centrists.
We also discussed
and adopted a simple, succinct mission statement for the movement, as
follows:
"To unite the middle and give power to its voice."
We talked by speakerphone to Hamilton Jordan, former White House
Chief of Staff during the Carter Administration and cofounder of Unity08, an effort to form a
bipartisan unity ticket for the 2008 presidential election. Mr. Jordan
discussed his experiences managing the Carter campaign and advising
the 1992 Perot campaign, and his conviction that middle America is ripe for a
return to centrist leadership.
