December 21, 2008On Rick WarrenI don't like it either, but not for the same reasons. To me it seems silly to be angry over the gay rights issue in regards to Warren. Human Rights needs to pick up the clue phone. The entire point of the Obama campaign, and what seems to guide the man himself, is this belief that we need to return to civil discourse. This means working with people that disagree with you and not playing the scorched earth political games that seem all too regular these days. Coming from Obama, this isn't that surprising of a move. That been said, I am a little annoyed at all the attention Warren gets. He is a good man, but he subscribes to a mega-church, literal version of theology that I personally disagree with. There are some of us who go to church, but believe in more liberal interpretations of the bible. The bible on homosexuality, for instance, is one area that is grossly misunderstood because many have twisted the text to support their own political persuasion. I would encourage others to check out this article. Why does it seem that there are no other churches in America anymore, that aren't like the one Warren preaches to on Sundays? I understand the growth of the mega church movement, but believer's in Christ are a diverse group with a wide range of political and personal opinions on all sorts of issues. I would have hoped that Obama, belonging to a church that also doesn't get much attention most of his adult life, would have used this opportunity to pick someone a little less well known... someone that represents the rest of us. I share your views about Warren and the mega-church phenomenon in general. But as far as Obama's selection of Warren to give the invocation, it indicates that he was serious about trying to bridge partisan divides. That's encouraging. Maybe "change" really does mean change. Posted by: Tom Carter at December 21, 2008 09:02 PMIn that respect, I agree. Posted by: Scoop Jackson Democrat at December 21, 2008 11:28 PMWarren equates being gay with being a pedophile, bigamist, etc. The oly thing he didn't compare being gay to was a being a serial divorcere like Gingrich or Limbaugh. |
