I wonder if these hackers realize that they are identical in kind (if different in detail) from a thug who beats up others on the street just for kicks (i.e. not even to steal their money)? I suspect that they would be outraged to get mugged by a thrill-seeker. But what they do is really no different, for all that it is electronic rather than physical.

It's a perfect time to use my proposed public beating sentence.

I'm more in favor of public anthill-staking.

Actually, more and more cybercrime is done by cybermafias, in countries short of well-paying honest jobs.

Strategies vary - some like to hold disabled sites hostage,others like to gather personal information and sell it. Some sell farms of hacked computers.

The best way to keep your computers from being owned is to run anything but Windows, or failing that use firefox as a browser and thunderbird for mail (yeah, you can read Outlook mail on thunderbird, google or email me how to set it up).
