Open Thread: Travelblogging From LA

We're here for a conference and to see some in-laws.

I don't like the hotel, the Long Beach Westin - I feel nickel-and-dimed. They charge too much for everything but the oxygen And plenty of things don't work so well. The service is MOSTLY good, though - the only bit that does so well. Given that the in-laws are close to here, they're probably losing some repeat business with us.

But I'm enjoying the neighborhood around it. We've had some good food, had a good dinner with my father-in-law (we're lucky - we both have in-laws we like and get along with fine) (yep, really!).

The trip's been hard on the Profesora, though - it's hard to write a paper when the kid takes forever to go to sleep. And she decided to celebrate her paper being given by falling off a curb.

I've decided I don't like this trip - too many things are going wrong.

Blogging's been VERY hard, between the kid (three teeth coming in NOW) and the hotel having a terribly dicey Internet service. I lost 99% of my outgoing packets from my room, and got my $10 (!) for one days' service back.

I got back last Friday from 4 days of working a Symantec meeting at the Palazzo myself. Incredible beds. I never can sleep at a hotel but this was an exception and made editing for 13-17 hours straight each day bearable. And people who "get" service. Either they have excellent training or a really good system at weeding out people or both. Incredible.

My only complaint would be the last night, when I stumbled up to my 37th floor suite over looking the golf course at 2AM, there was the sound of little kids next door.
After hearing them run around and then go outside their door I peeked outside myself, looked at two little boys that reminded me of myself and my brother at 7 and 5, and put my finger to my lips and asked them to be quiet. They respectfully nodded their heads and went back in to their own suite. The semi-quiet lasted about 2 minutes but the bed was so nice I didn't care and managed to get some decent sleep before my 8AM call.

Convention food at the Venetian was really good. They got smart and fed that attendees breakfast lunch and dinner. Fell in love with the fruit tartlets. Wednesday night one of the higher ups treated some of us in the video and web crew to the Aquaknox restaurant where I had killer Maine scallops. Fascinating person, physically active and over 60, Viet Nam widow. I get to work with some great people and personalities.

Alas, too busy to see any shows (Wayne Brady, Blue Man, Jersey Boys, etc....or do any gambling (just as well as the table minimum at the Blackjack tables was 10 bucks) and as usual on these trips, my swimming trunks stayed dry.

uh did I mention how sumptious the suites are at the Palazzo?......
