Open Family Worries Thread

Being a capitalist roader in good standing, I'm worried about my kid going Commie.

He's been sighted twice with Mao's Little Red Book; the Profesora has a Spanish-language version on her lower shelves. He was positively devouring it; it's surviving OK because it has a plasticish cover. And all this before he can even read!

I'm also worried about a cousin who has a construction business.

So, what grief and worries have your families been giving you?

Your cousin may do okay. Construction includes remodeling. Lots of contractors end up remodeling anyway and when people are "stuck" in their homes as they are in teh current market they tend to want to do things like build an addition or fix up a bathroom or do earthquake retrofits. Like where the New Madrid fault lies. A friend of mine did a LOT of expensive remodels when the California market was flat 10 years ago.

My now 15-yr old daughter is still under her sullen vow of adolescence...is hooked on Joy Division, but not suicide-she does have a point - JD made great music. I've turned her onto the Residents and other groups which she likes. HAs a nice eclectic collection on her ipod. Other than that she got on the honor roll so can't complain too much. She says she likes math and her English teacher loves her writing style.
My partner who works at a biotech firm got screwed yet again by her sexist Indian national boss (probably a former H1B visa holder)so no promotion . This has been going on for more than 10 years -(can't quit as she's in a very narrow niche job technically speaking.) He's also just incompetent - thinks maybe she wants his job which she doesn't. HR is absolutely no help. If/when she ever gets out of the business there will be one hell of a lawsuit.
I'll insist on it.
Her teen daughter is also getting into the sullen act. Probably following the older semi-stepsister.
she may quit hockey after this last season's debacle.
She got accepted to seriously good prep school (CPS in Oakland) but we can't afford it so she's going to my kid's school which is quite good as it puts out great athletes and scholars. One of last year's crop had a perfect SAT.

Sympathies and co-sympathies. Am there, doing that, 14 year old, also good grades etc. Going into an IB high-school program next year. Woo hoo! Your marvelous phrasing "her sullen vow of adolescence" resonates.

oops - phrasing was in error
It really is "vow of sullen adolescence".
