December 03, 2007Chavez Hasn't Hacked Venezuelan Voting MachinesTwo nice surprises came today - Chavez' loss in his constitution-tossing try, and the implication that he hasn't been hacking the uncheckable voting machines after all, as I've speculated before. !Que bueno! From the Chronicles of Caracas: "The essence of Chavez's concession speech was: sod the lot of you, I'm gonna do it anyway. If what he used to call "the sovereign people" don't like his constitutional reforms, that's neither here nor there to him: sooner or later, one way or another, he'll get there. He offered his supporters no explanations for why he failed at such a critical juncture. He shed no light about why he lost what was, in his own words, was "the most important election in our history", one meant to mark the revolution's future. He had no particular insights on what it says about his ideological platform that a popular petrocrat could lose an election against a bunch of adolescents, at a time when oil prices hover over $90 a barrel. He had no answers, only tunnel vision. If there was a message from the voters, he just missed it. In this context, "reflecting" probably, means finding somebody to blame. There was no indication yesterday that Chávez had the slightest clue as to where to begin reflecting on what had happened, or any intention to respect the underlying decision the voters have made." One other observation. Syria may very have been building a bomb assembly plant. Just look at what they did to the bombed site. Chavez too wants to get involved in uranium enrichment and nuclear energy. Recent reports have also given some credence to past NK nuke tests involving small nukes like the ones needed for ballistic missile warheads. AQ Khan is far from quiet. An interesting reality is that Chavez, Ahmadinejad, Assad and others may well have been trying to spread out the industry and collaboration needed for nuclear weapons. This “no vote” may have some effect on Chavez's role in this strategic partnership. Division in the military might make keeping secrets harder. Both Putin and Chavez are forced a bit back from tyranny while opposition is likely to grow. Reports in the new NIE say that in 2002, Iran was trying to build a nuke. Iran was lying to the world and America and her allies uncovered their secret program. It seems our invasion of Iraq put a hold on their nuke programs or at least made them alter their strategy. It may very well be that building heavy water facilities, burying new bunkers and perfecting enrichment is Iran's present tact while developing alliances outside of Iran. The point of this digression is that only by confronting the totality of threats can America be reasonably confident an alliance against the West is thwarted. There are alot of holes in the latest NIE. Their analysis has a limited focus with a number of caveats. We should not ignore Iran’s record of accomplishment or those in the front of anti-Americanism and extremism. The new world presents abundant opportunities of oil wealth and technology to spread and organize clandestinely. I am expecting Chavez to find another route to tyranny. I don't trust Iran or Syria, but sanctions, support of Democracy and a broad spectrum of action is required to slow our adversaries down. I wonder if the Left will give Bush credit for disrupting Iran's drive towards nukes. Bobby once said Iraq was a message to governments who support a WMD/terrorist network. The NIE seems to confirm that mission was accomplished in both Iraq and Iran. I wonder if Democrats will applaud the administration's rejection of Chavez's power play. He, like Assad, Putin and Ahmadinejad are not going away. What they cannot do in the open, they will undoubtedly try in the darkness. Our political divisions here should not keep us from seeing that, nor characterize all that Bush has done as mistaken, foolish and ineffectual. AP back to the same old crap. You would think they would have learned something. And this is a wonderful spin. Posted by: Maxtrue at December 3, 2007 10:37 PMWhy would Chavez have apparently fair elections if he is such a tyrant? That doesn't make sense to me. Also, I think it unlikely that Chavez would attempt to contravene the acknowledged will of the people. The problem with Bush is that he continued his superheated rhetoric against Iran when he knew or should have known that that Iran had scrapped its nuke program. If anything I think Iran is glad the U.S. is bogged down in Iraq. Moreover, I believe Iran has continued its support of Hezbollah in spite of the invasion. So I don't think Bobby's comment is very valid. The fact is since the invasion of Iraq international terrorism has been on the rise. The world is probably less safe thanks to Bush's little war. Probably Iran sought a nuke program to defend itself against an invasion like that in Iraq. I don't think the world is a simple black and white affair. There is evil and good on both sides. The U.S. has not always lived up to its high standards. The upshot is that people in places like Iran and Venezuela support strong men to protect them against U.S. meddling. The tyranny and injustice of another nation should not be an excuse to invade it to loot its resources. Their wrongs don't excuse ours. I'm sorry to say this but I feel the Bush Administration has not been honest or upright. FYI, this doesn't mean I support tyranny or injustice. If I don't like Bush it doesn't mean I love the terrorists.
