Kidblogging: Kid Has Much To Be Thankful For

It's been an eventful thanksgiving for him. He got his first two teeth (lower jaw) yesterday ("All I want for Thanksgiving are my two front teeth").

Tonight was his first successful crawl. It was pretty clumsy, of course - it was his first, after all - he was fanning his feet backward for propulsion instead of moving the entire leg backward - but it means alot of parental worrying about cables on the floor and bottom shelves of our many bookcases.

Kewl! And right on schedule. He's gonna be chasing you around the house soon on hands and knees, giggling. Remember what I said about those bookshelves and fixing them to the wall. It won't be long before he's "cruising" by pulling himself upright using any available handhold, so you have to be sure the available handholds are actually stationary and steady, because HE won't be! (Also time to kid-proof the electrical cords, tablecloths, window blind cords, lamps, household chemical storage, and check for poisonous hosueplants if you haven't already. And he's gonna start using those teeth on everything.)

And of course, stair gates...you don't really have to worry about shoes until he actually starts walking.

We're buying a house just to get away from the stairs. We've already killed all the houseplants ;-). BTW, ow do you kid proof one million computer-related cords in the office?

The same way you kid-proof the kitchen: a kid gate across the door. If you get one that's about 2 1/2 or 3 feet high, you can step over it yourselves, but it will still stop the kid for a couple of years.

What wj said. Seriously. Or bundle 'em back behind the computer desk, out of reach. Make certain spaces and items physically out of bounds for toddlers, or you'll regret it. Then childproof the holy hell out of what's still available to them. I went to the extent of installing key locks on the under-sink cabinets and the medicine cabinet, and I'm glad I did. Even it meant tracking down my key ring whenever I wanted an aspirin. Silverware and knives? Out of reach. Glass glasses? Likewise, and never left on the counter. Plastic is your friend. Love the sippie cup. I put the window blind cords up so high my (short) wife had to call me over to use them. Do not get new carpets yet. That can wait a while...trust me. But investing in one of those mini spot-carpet cleaners is a good idea.

I'm trying to remember all the things our kids did that they thought were funny and that either scared us silly or made us angry. Like painting on the walls (including with diaper contents, YUCK), or climbing onto the backs of chairs and standing up. Any small item available WILL eventually end up in a mouth. Reachable books are sacrifices. Good books should be out of reach.

Light bulbs--blankies thrown over lamps are a great way to start house fires. Seen that one--caught it by the smell before it did more than ruin the blanket. CF bulbs aren't nearly as bad that way.

Since you never know WHAT they will do, everything creates paranoia. :-) But they do grow out of it. It just SEEMS like forever. Then they give you new challenges. :-D About the time they quit being high physical maintenance they become high psychic maintenance. Like all parents, I have tales. Many of them.

Number one piece of new-parent advice that you both have likely already learned the hard way--nap when the kid does.

While you're not getting new carpets yet, check out this stuff: http://www.odorkill.com/ You'll be glad you did.

We got it when it was still called Slusher's Odor Kill, and it is truly amazing. (Even takes out the smell of skunks! As in dead ones, under the house.)
