November 25, 2007Kasparov jailedPutin seems to've decided Kasparov was a threat after all. Here's an ironically clueless Tyler Cowen post on Kasparov's non-captivity, from about a week before his detention. My guess on what changed is that Kasparov has learned about political coalitions, and was showing signs of building a big one. Can't have the people expressing their will, can we, Vladimir? I think the rise of authoritarianism is ignored by much of the Free World. Chavez, Ahmadinejad, Putin, China, Myanmar, etc.....seem to get off easy. In some cases smart thinkers miss the mark and fail to attribute our weak stand on Liberal Democracy as a contributing factor. One writer thinks our promotion of Democracy per se is creating dangers. Maybe, but Jefferson nor Kennedy called for an internationalism that simply advocated Democracy. They advocated Liberal Democracy and Constitutional Process that protected minority rights. We had better rise to our own ideals or the world will revert to new tensions and threats, squandering our hard-fought position of leadership. Imagine the Left discovering an American corporation forcing workers to vote their way. You are right about Kasparov building coalitions. I hear some Russian businesses are thinking about using USSR as a trademark of sorts. Maybe on jeans? How ironic is that?
