November 08, 2007Palestinian Authority Democracy Impossible Without Moderates in OppositionIt's hard to have a healthy democracy without at least two popular parties that have moderate wings. Fatah has both moderate and extreme wings, so it's OK. But Hamas doesn't do the job, because they don't have a moderate wing. Otherwise, you don't get the spiral of improvement from competitive moderate politics. Until that happens, it's hopeless, especially against the pressure of funding for Palestinian extremists. Well, you could make a case that Hamas' moderate (relatively, of course) wing are the folks who run their social welfare programs. They appear to have minimal influence in setting Hamas' political stance, but they do exist. Sort of like the moderate wing of the Republican party is going lately, now that I think about it.
