October 19, 2007Open Thread: Need SleepI hate days after not being able to sleep until late. Sigh. So what's up for you guys? UPDATE: Saw something mebbe worth chatting about - nonpartisan elections. Canada's Nortwest Territory has them. Here's an interesting quote that sounded promising to me:
Personally, I get tired of state and local candidates running against Bush or whoever's President. After all, so far, they're running for a local office, and I'd rather hear what they have to say about local problems. And when they're in office, I want them to spend their energy on their job, not the Presidency. Candidates for Austin munipical positions run nonpartisan, and do a pretty good job. So, whadja think? Think nonpartisan government could help American state and national government? There's alot of evidence that a moderate political party is literally hopeless, but this seems to actually work at a state-like level. Posted by Jon Kay at October 19, 2007 12:59 PMComments
I suspect that the people with the largest vested interest in the subject (the state party organizations and their employees) would fight it tooth and nail. Especially here in California, where they have evidence of the possible result. Just a couple of years ago, we actually had a non-partisan state election (to replace a governor who was being recalled). And what did we get? A moderate Republican! This in a seriously blue state, which has had Democratic majorities in the Legislature for decades. And where the state Republican Party has been hauled so far to the right that even Barbara Boxer keeps winning against what makes it thru the Republican primary to run against her. Obviously if such a thing as non-partisan elections were allowed at a state level regularly, the state government would be over-run with moderates. Oh, the horror! Posted by: wj at October 19, 2007 02:42 PMWe have moderate syndrome in Kansas as well. When the parties run wingers against each other, the GOP wins. When one party runs a moderate and the other a winger, the mdoerate wins. Which is why we have a Dem guv and a Dem AG right now in one of the red states. The ideologue Dems want to claim it as an anti-Bush reaction, but in truth it's an anti-rightwinger reaction. Moderate Republicans have no trouble at all winning. Rabid religious right Republicans are regluarly getting soundly beaten by moderate Dems, and last round, they're also losing primaries to moderates. To which I say, huzzah! Posted by: Tully at October 20, 2007 02:11 PM...which raises the question of, how do state party electorates come to be so sick sometimes?
