October 18, 2007MAXTRUE: Turkey and Genocide Grumble: Is Anyone Driving the Car?This is Maxtrue's first Centerfield post. Welcome, Max! -Jon Turkey prepares to invade Iraq Does anyone have any comments over the latest developments? As Rice and Gates are rebuffed by Putin over missile defense, Jimmy Carter has recently declared Sudan has not "legally" committed genocide in Darfur. Congress declares that Bush can take no action against Iran without approval. Democrats have blasted Hillary for even encouraging tougher sanctions on Iran. To summarize, the Democrats are sending a signal that sanctions are out and another signal to Turkey that their continued friendship is not worth delaying a Congressional history lesson. Jon Stewart might think he's funny asking Republicans if it's okay to call the Holocaust a Halfacaust, but in the same uncertain breath he asks if the Congress has apologized for slavery. How many people did Saddam, Stalin, Pol Pot, Mao and other despots murder? Could Congress have picked a worse moment to piss off the Turks? Or is that exactly what the Democrats want to make Iraq descend into real chaos? Please note suggested Democratic policy on Pakistan, Syria, Iran, Iraq, Russia etc. Is this the way to restore America's reputation? At this point, I ask, is anyone driving the car? Where is the op-ed from the NYT on this Armenian issue? Do Democrats care more about making Turkey an adversary than bringing justice to Myanmar, Sudan, Iraq, Somalia, Iran and other hotspots? Or is this another example of anything Bush is for, Democrats are against? Posted by Jon Kay at October 18, 2007 12:57 AMComments
Thanks Jon. I was wondering these thoughts several days ago and I must say that even tonight on Thursday I ask the same questions. My intention was more of an open question thread to start. Today was quite significant: Kurdish rebels vow to fight Turkey to the death as Turkish government approves invasion plans. Putin continues to blast the US calling our invasion of Iraq nothing more than a grab for oil as he defends Ahmadinejad. China blasts the US for recognizing the Dali Lama (good luck shutting down those NK uranium based plants). Turkey blasts the US on thinking about that Armenian genocide bill. Bhutto is nearly blown up returning to Pakistan as more than a hundred die in Pak's biggest terror bombing ever. Musharraf warned her. Can the two make a difference? The NYT goes silent on their report of a secret nuclear project in Syria, that Israel recently destroyed. What is the administration planning? Is Gates and Rice in charge? What is there strategy? Is there a coalition forming against us? Are the Democrats making things worse? Are they even minding the shop? Who in mediaworld is speaking out the clearest regarding our national self-interest? Is anybody listening? The gist of what I'm asking is whether one sees a real escalation of forces opposing the US as we slide and what America seems to be doing about it. Yes, a thread for anyone with some cogent answers beside suggesting medication…..
A bit more information on the topics I touched upon. From AP It is interesting that earlier reports from AP said that Bhutto had concerns that the Pakistan Intelligence Services were behind the attack. An apology for such lame initial reporting? Will history repeat itself? With the world downplaying some genocide and denouncing other genocide, with authoritarian regimes treated softly by the West, with extremism attacking from the Far East to Pakistan, from Africa to Mexican pipelines, are the American people and their leaders dropping the ball? NYT who encouraged investment by French and others in Kurdistan have little comment about this nor do they fully explore both the Armenian resolution impact, the Democratic support for the benchmark of the Kirkuk referendum or even the questionable results of withdrawal that Putin demands because we went to Iraq "to steal their oil." Another AP spin First, does AP even dare place into context that they have reported Syria now claims NO ISRAELI ATTACK HAPPENED? What possible motive do the Syrians have to lie if the attack was NOT on a nuclear facility? Second, diplomats have a clue as to what a destroyed nuke facility looks like? Why the speculations and no comment about the Syrian lie that no attack happened?
