One big problem with earning a reputation as a liar is that people don't believe you when you tell the truth. Which is why, if the US pulls out of Iraq and suffers as a result (as looks increasingly likely), the two people most responsible for the pull-out will be George W. Bush and Richard Cheney. Every time they insist that we must stay, they convince more people that, simply because they are the ones saying it, it must be false. Pity. Posted by: tired at July 6, 2007 04:55 PMHeh, the administration that cried wolf. It would also help if they'd say more than just "stay" or "surge". Of course, then they'd have to ease up a bit on the secrecy. ... How is Ron Paul third in fund raising yet rarely even registers in polling? Is it a lack of mainstream media coverage or that he's been writen off as a kook? Or both? Posted by: Ziusudra at July 6, 2007 05:34 PMMoney is only weakly correlated with electoral success. Remember, the same thing happened to Dean, though he at least got plenty of (bad) coverage. The low reporting is probably because Paul's already been seen on the national stage, and he went nowhere then. Personally, I'm unlikely to vote for him because he's not interested enough in liberty for me. He's for DOMA and against abortion choice. I've watched him, though, because the my wife, the Profesora, used to live in his district. I met Ron Paul MANY years ago (I hesitate to say how many) so I keep track of him. My differences with his politics aside, he may be the most genuine member of Congress. He even puts his minimal amount of pork right out front, and doesn't put it in bills until the spending limits of the bill have been established. I lived in that district and met him long before he was first elected. Posted by: Tully at July 7, 2007 11:31 AMPretty interesting, Tully. Yeah, I do find his pork approach pretty admirable. Clearly, his district finds his discipline preferable to somebody who might get them, as a district, more pork. If only politicians would take a lesson from that. The Profesora lived in San Marcos. You? Posted by: Jon Kay at July 8, 2007 02:29 AMLa Marque and later Nassau Bay, just a hop across the street from NASA JSC. Before that San Antonio. Posted by: Tully at July 8, 2007 02:22 PM |
