Memorial Day Weekend Open Thread

I'm starting early.

I have a grueling weekend planned. My schedule (wife and kids are out of town) is as follows:

- Saturday: Yard work a.m., golf in the afternoon, watch "Brotherhood" and "Arrested Development" Netflix DVDs at night.
- Sunday. Lather, rinse, repeat.
- Monday: Lather, rinse, repeat.

My parents are coming down from the panhandle so we're having a Texas BBQ with brisket, pork shoulder and violated chicken on Sunday. That will take all day Sunday, starting around 6 AM so Monday will be a lounging day. Golf tomorrow.

Looks like it will rain all weekend here.

I made a lamb stew last night. It probably had a few too many potatoes, but I'm happy with the meat and sauce. It gave me the opportunity to get rid of a couple of beers I'm not happy with, some Breckinridge Unremarkable Vanilla Stout. It's much better as stew than beer, I'd say; remember, you've been warned.

You're violating chickens in Dallas?

Oh, my. Isn't there a law about that? ;-)

The
Men's Lacrosse championship
is on now.

Go, Blue Jays!

We're waiting for a baby to get around to getting born here. It's interesting to contrast our fears. The Profesora is afraid the kid will die crossing the street; I'm afraid he'll spend his entire adult life in Travis County Jail.

The chickens were certainly violated and it should have been against the law, the way I treated them. It's been raining her for 6 or 7 days and Sunday was no different. So I had the smoker stabilized for a cool overcast day. Then at about 3, right after I put the chickens on, the skies parted, the sun came out and the temp in the smoker shot up 50 degrees while I was doing something else (drinking beer). The chickens were lost but luckily the briskets were already off and the pork shoulder held up to the error quite well.

Yesterday, we went to the Tyler rose gardens which were beautiful. Hope everyone had a great Memorial Day.

Jon, I'd worry he'll grow up to quit college on you. :-)

Yep, that's a fowl violation.

Glad you salvaged the good stuff, though. When you have shoulder and brisket the chickens are just corner-fillers, after all.

Jon, it's amazing how little time you'll have to obsess about such things once the baby arrives and you enter the world of perpetual sleep deprivation. (Been there, done that!)
