April 17, 2007Postal English Major ThreadMy proposed legislation for putting down this pernicious threat:
I'm not sure whether to be sad or glad that UT's long-time record with our fine Tower Shooter has finally been beaten. Interestingly, Charles Whitman's house went on the market just recently. Posted by Jon Kay at April 17, 2007 12:54 PMComments
Being an English major at a school with a name containing "Tech" doesn't bode well for one's frame of mind. Since the spirit here is to make fun of English majors, I'd like to offer a bit of persective on how lowly they may actually be. I'm one of two EEs in my office, the rest of the engineers being civil and/or structural in discipline. We two EEs joke that one becomes a civil engineer after discovering his or her inability to understand Maxwell's Equations and the subsequent lobotomy that naturally follows such a discovery. We hold civil engineers in esteem roughly ten times that of English majors. Posted by: WHQ at April 17, 2007 03:11 PMOn the other hand, at least civil engineers can handly _some_ math. Industrial engineers, on the other hand, . . . . Posted by: wj at April 18, 2007 09:18 AM"Anybody proposing stupid, useless legislation will be shot^h^h^h^h given a million dollars." That's what each victim's family might get after demanding to know how a threat to the public safety stayed on campus. Stalking alone wasn't tolerated where I schooled. I do agree however, that the writer from Civil Liberties at the end of your last Post gets it right about remembering. Other stories will follow which include the above points, enforcing gun-free zones (Try being caught with a gun "near" a school in NYC), rappers and guns, terrorists and schools, America's sickness (Huffington). These media threads following Imus have deflected from Fallon's report on Iraq today, military paper on Global Warming (based primarily on the IPCC), almost two hundred getting blown up by AQ in Green zone, Gates’ remark that diplomacy is working on Iran, Rudy's non enlistment past or even the debate among Islamic scholars as to whether the Koran permits using WMD on non Islamic population. If a terrorist had shot so many students many would be arguing FOR guns as self-defense. We certainly don't have enough security guards. I am at a loss to explain why our founding fathers granted the right to bare arms as an instrument against tyranny and not for personal defense. Why? There were Indians and wildlife and far less police as a deterrent to criminals or protection from slavery's rebellion. I thought I was too affected by this tragedy to comment ...for this is the loss of not only these 30 bright young people, but the loss of another 60 bright people for this country...
How about all the yuppies from the univ staff, to univ admin jackasses ...and other professional yuppies involved who were too stupid to have stopped this whacko along the way? How about those kids in the dorms so well propagandized about being PC that they put up with If those 30 hadn't been "educated" for years by the "educated" yuppies types for so many years, they wouldn't have been sheep led to their deaths and slaughter. They would have had some other skills to try and possibly save their lives.
Yes, I agree. We ought to have the courage of our judgements and deal quickly and harshly with "obvious whackos." Hey, what's that in my cheek? Could it be my tongue? But, hey, if they'd only had John "Bulletproof" Derbyshire or Glenn "Rambo" Reynolds there, everything would have been different, right? Posted by: Blue Jean at April 22, 2007 11:32 AM |
