Friday Soundtrack Open Thread

It's a cold, rainy, windy, Friday Morning in Beantown. The sky is crying, and IMO nothing suits that like gutbucket blues, so I'm on Muddy Waters 1947-55.

It's an open thread so it's all good. But if you want a starter, what's your friday soundtrack, or what's some of your favorite blues? BTW, if you have a chance to catch eiher the Muddy Waters or Ray Charles documentaries on PBS, do yourself a favor.

Muddy Waters is cool. I like John Lee Hooker. I would like to get more into Buddy Guy and maybe see him live sometime. Stevie Ray Vaughn was an instrumental vituoso. I still remember driving to New Brunswick to find a place to live, like a week before school because I'm an ass, and hearing on the radio that he was killed in a helicopter accident. They started playing a bunch of his stuff and I was fighting back tears.

Stretching into blues-based rock, I love OLD AC/DC, early Zep, the Cream, Hedrix's blusier stuff. One of my favorite bands, Clutch, has moved progressively over the years from their weird take on hardcore to a more blue-based rock. And they've done it quite well.

This is a "stop and smell the roses" day for us. Last week at this time, I could see large portions of my lawn. Since then, we have had about 30 inches of snow. The whole family is hunkered down today (school is closed), watching movies. Later, we will go sledding. The memories from days like this are always great.

I love Hooker too, really visceral stuff, especially when it's his acoustic delivery with just the pounding foot for percussion. My favorite Hooker is Groundhog Blues, sung as though it's about a groundhog, but really it's about the guy his wife is cheating with...

If you like Cream and Zeppelin and other british 60s blues rock, you might really enjoy Howlin' Wolf's London Sessions with the Stones and Clapton et al as the all-star backing band. For my money, it's not as good as the straight wolf, but you may find it more accessible. Check out this howlin wolf on youtube.

If there is one blues guy you MUST have, it has to be Freddie King. I can personally guarantee Hideaway: the best of Freddie King.

At work, I listen to Pandora which I can't recommend highly enough. I have three favorite stations, one started from Old 97's, one from Robert Earl Keen and one from BT. I listen to the BT one predominantly at work because electronica covers the background noise without requiring attention.

It's 62 here, though we are forecasted to get our probable last freezes this weekend. Gotta bring in all the plants I moved out last week hoping we wouldn't get another cold snap. Yup, love it when 62 is a cold snap.

Better weather may be on the way, bk. Without looking at the Boston forecast, I can tell you that it was cold, windy and rainy here in Philly this morning. It's still windy, but now it's very sunny and well into the 50's.

I might have some Freddie King. My wife bought me the multi-CD compilation for Scorcese's blues documentary a while ago, but I haven't listened to all of it. I'll have to dig it out. He's probably in there somewhere. I was bombarded by new music around the same time when a friend of mine was a DJ with a metal show on his college radio station. He was burning me ten CDs a week, many of which I have yet to listen to.

Stretching into blues-based rock, I love ...
For a rainy day: Dazed and Confused Led Zeppelin

PS Sunny in Phoenix ;-)

I got back here a week ago Wednesday from Phoenix. Every time I go there, I'm blown away by how much stuff is there that wasn't there the last time. When are you guys going to run out of water?

Posted by: WHQ at March 2, 2007 02:35 PM

Water! We don't need no stinkin' water!

PS: in about 20 years

Posted by: c3 at March 2, 2007 05:25 PM

Wind chill -30 here. Anchorage, AK

I saw John Lee Hooker about 20+ years ago. Better recorded IMO.

A couple of times I went to a blues series at UCSD's Triton Pub with somebody who later committed suicide. I'll let you decide if it was my presence or the not-so-good music that caused it....

Just got back from CA. They held off from the rain while we were there, but not the allergies.

Max,
So Evo Morales blames his "El Nino originated" floods on industrialized nations and their pollution. Well then for AZ's sake we all need to sully the skies some more because El Nino was a bust in AZ this year.

Posted by: c3 at March 3, 2007 09:59 AM

Yep, and I'm waiting for Chavez to declare pollution an attack by the US on the poor of the world.

Poor Edwards.... if you go to his blog and read the comments it is quite strange.

I saw Buddy Guy and JL Hooker play outside of Boston many years back. My band was closer to Zep and later U2 which I used to see in Boston before they were famous.

For joggers, I suggest listening to Amon Tobin.

As for the weather, look was Google Earth caught on camera. I bet the DOD is interested. A beautiful day in NYC.
