Idiocracy

My wife and I both found Mike Judge's sociopolitical satire Idiocracy pretty amusing. IMDB is rating it only 6.3. What that means is your mileage, but my guess is some of the jokes might have gone over the heads of the Beavis and Butthead crowd.

The premise? Luke Wilson and Maya Rudoph are average folks frozen in an Army experiment, and they're accidently kept frozen for 500 years while the dummies outbreed the "smart" people. When they wake up, they're comparative geniuses. Absurdity ensues. It's not a masterpiece, but there's a lot to chuckle at. It could probably have been even better.

What are your most and least favorite movies about politics, including but not confined to satires?

Whether this is a thinly disguised partisan attack piece, on the one hand, or something with any measurable value whatsoever, on the other, will probably be determined by what the characteristics used to illustrate how "dumb" this future society is happen to be.

It's NOT a partisan attack piece. I'd have noticed that.

The characteristics used to illustrate dumbness are things like lots of gratuitous swearing, blank expressions, and so on.

It doesn't try to exemplify dumbness via expression of certain political viewpoints as foolish. It shows a devolution of people to a beavis and butthead level of "critical thinking" that does not transcend pure-id instant gratification.

I don't know about measurable value either, though. Outside of asking "is this where we're heading?" it's just funny.

You can visit the imdb link I provided for good illustrations.

Judge Hank "The Hangman" BMW: Now prosecutor, why you think he done it?

Prosecutor: 'Kay. Number one your honor, just look at him. And B, we've got all this, like, evidence, of how, like, this guy didn't even pay at the hospital. And I heard that he doesn't even have his tattoo.

[crowd boos]

Prosecutor: I know! And I'm all, 'you've gotta be shittin' me!' But check this out man, judge should be like

[bangs fist on table]

'guilty!' Peace.

Get it?
