February 09, 2007What's up with Barry Obama?According to MSNBC Obama wants to opt out of federal matching funds for the primary only to possibly opt in for the general. Seems logical to me. As a supporter of public campaign financing he would rather take the Federal money, but as a politician he isn't going to beat Hillary unless he can keep up in the money race. On the one hand this sends a message to donors that he is serious, on the other hand, well, flip-flopper. Patrick Ruffini thinks this is really a setup for Obama to run in 2012, not 2008. I originally thought that idea was silly, but now we learn that Obama is skipping the first debate in Nevada. Hmmm.... important primary state, a debate held by an important Democratic constituency, everyone else will be there... Why would Obama do this? Unless Tully and Patrick are right... He isn't seriously going to run. If that is true, that was the most successful book tour since Colin Powell's My American Journey. Comments
I don't think that scenario makes much sense. If the Democrats win, Obama is out for 2012 (absent some really weird scenario). If the GOP wins, he has to run against an incumbent president, who might actually be popular. That's originally why I assumed he wanted to run this year in the first place--this is the best time for a Democrat to run. Posted by: Marc at February 9, 2007 02:39 PMI think I suggested a Hillary/Obama ticket. Does Obama and Hillary equal one black according to Slate? LOL I still think Obama won't win in the primaries and doubted he would last until the end. Still too early to tell. Posted by: Maxtrue at February 9, 2007 03:08 PMthe senator is not running for vp or for 2012. He actually was drafted for real. His campaign is still organizing and calling donors. I think the strategy on the financing is brilliant. It makes him look good and Hillary look money grubbing and all corporate controlled. Hey, I never said he wasn't serious. I said he might be running as much this time for the cred and chips as anything else. So many do. And if he's planning on a VERY serious future attempt, cred and chips are crucial. No time like now to start building 'em. Posted by: Tully at February 10, 2007 07:08 PM |
