Open Football Thread

I'm hoping the Texas Longhorns beat the Aggies.

So what happened at K State? Well, of course, K State is a good team, with a thoughtful coach.

I noticed at the beginning of the season that the Horns' new QB, Colt McCoy, is fairly similar to a predecessor of his that got lots of yardage, one Major Applewhite (including hard-to-live-up=to names).

K State noticed, too, and brought the same system they used to beat Applewhite a few times: LOTS of really good blitzing, successfully putting him in the dirt time after time.

On the O side, they took careful advantage of Longhorn injuries to pass the ball.

Hopefully McCoy will get better at scampering than Applewhite did; IMHO, he'll never be as good at that as Vince Young is, but Applewhite never got good because he had an early ACL and always had running troubles after that.

I'm only miidly worried that the Aggies'll capitalize on that - it takes a really good and focused D to get past the Horns' O-line. The Horns have had an excellent O-line since, well, Applewhite. The Aggies never beat Applewhite except once when he played sick.

As a lifelong Sooner fan, I'm hoping the Aggies pull an upset this week. I think it's a little early to compare McCoy to Applewhite. I disagree with you saying that Applewhite never got good...he was one of the few QB's Texas had that I hated to see back there...Vince didn't scare me when we had any kind of Defense, and Simms, well, we just loved it when he was under center for Texas.

well, it looks like I got my wish! I REALLY wasn't expecting this...I thought Texas had the better team by far. Now I don't have to hope the Sooners backdoor their way into a BCS bowl...if they take care of business tomorrow they'll have a shot at winning a BCS berth outright.

I've never been a Sooner fan, but I have to root for them after the way they got jobbed against Oregon earlier in the season. The replay official today said that he knew OU had recovered the onside kick but he couldn't overrule the referee. I'm not a conspiracy theorist, but it's hard to understand how those officials could blow TWO calls so badly.

Hook THAT, 'Horns.... :-)

My Aggie friends and relatives are into serious gloat about now.

Marc, that jobbing at Oregon was perhaps the hardest thing Sooner fans have had to swallow since Howard Schnellenberger and John Blake. It was a wonder that my TV survived the projectiles hurled at it that day. Actually, the refs blew 3 calls all on that one onside kick. a) they touched the ball before it went 10 yards. b) they interfered with our guy trying to catch the ball before it had traveled 10 yards, and of course c) we actually recovered it. I'm not sure I buy what that replay guy is saying though, because I remember that game quite clearly, and I remember hearing the ref cite "indisputable video evidence" that it should be Oregons ball. From what the replay guy is saying, there is no way the refs should have used the word indisputable in there at all....so I just don't buy any of it. I have no idea what really went on, but I am fairly certain that whatever it was, it was no good (either incompetence or malice).

BUT, none of that really matters now I suppose since the Sooners control their own destiny for the moment. It does make me wonder if we'd be one of the teams in consideration for the national title game if we had won that game, but no matter how crimson tinted my glasses may be, I still don't think we are good enough to beat Ohio State. But if we can win tomorrow and against Nebraska, It's likely that we would face Boise State in the Fiesta...which could be interesting. Or not...it's hard to get a handle on just how good (or not good) some of these mid-major teams really are.

Deep Sigh. And it wasn't even such a good game, because the Horns weren't in it until the last eightth of the game. I mean, normally when the 'Horns lose a game (especially a grudge match), it's because both sides played great football, and the other side played better. Not today. Sigh.

Well, I felt we also were robbed of two really bad calls against us, which might've changed the score, but I don't feel bitter, because it wasn't like they played well and deserved to win.

The Horns were in it around halftime when they went up 7-6, and despite the fact that they were pretty flat, I thought they had plenty of opportunities to pull it out. McCoy had a terrible game. I wonder if he was still feeling the effect of his injury at K-state? I'm sure the cheap shot he took after his last pick didn't help either. I wondered if he should have been benched after that because when he came out on the last drive he didn't look like himself at all. If Snead had had a full drive to work with, he might have been able to do more than just throw a pick.

So I didn't see the bad calls, because I wasn't able to watch the game. Just saw the replays a little while ago. Anyway, I hope Colt is alright...as much as burnt orange makes me puke, I hate to see players go down like he did.

There were a couple of tough calls that didn't go Texas's way-- the touchdown pass that got called back at the end of the first half because of offensive interference. Replays I saw did show that he pushed off, but it looked to me like the defender had interfered just moment earlier on the play, so it was kind of a wash. But when it was followed by a pick, well...

The other was the trapped pass in the second half. That one, I think, was a legitimate catch that might very well have changed the outcome of the game. It was weird, though. One angle of the replay really made it look like the pass touched the ground, but the other angle made it look like a clean reception. I guess more proof that the interpretation is the hard part and that the devil is in the details.

Ike,

Not to make it even more painful, but there was another bad call later on, on a pass interference called on Oklahoma, when the ball had clearly been tipped, which should have negated the pass interference.

I think the replay official was implying that the referee ignored what the replay official said.
