Tie Score Early in War on Christmas

Once again this year, I'd like to jump in early on the War on Christmas by warning folks about battles to come over the next month and some, including the evergreens that get reliably trotted out. Consider it an open thread on the subject of the seasonal ramping up of the culture wars as well as a recounting of same tired faux controversies that get ramped up when the christmas spotlight flickers to life. Chime in with your most and least favorite holiday evergreens, and vent away. What sticks in your craw or warms your heart? Is it the list of dangerous toys, or the sheer volume of formula tearjerkers that go "it's going to be a hard christmas for family x and especially sad kid y because of horrible tragedy z?" Let us know!

So far, in the early going in the war on Christmas, there's a time out on the field 2 minutes into the first quarter with the score tied 1-1. The religious right scored first last week when Walmart reported it had felt the pain of last season's protests and was henceforth determined to greet customers with Merry Christmas early and often. No word on whether this policy applies to folks wearing a turban or a yarmulke. The recounting by Snopes of the ongoing yarn aspect has not been updated to reflect this development.

But the secularists quickly evened the score when the Marines Toys for Tots program turned down Free Jesus Dolls. My suspicion is that the coach of the RR team is going to ask to have that score reviewed. He's reaching for the red flag. Stay tuned.

By the way, check out the photo of the Jesus doll. The savior looks good...buff and well-fed. He must be working out. Quite a change from the gaunt and sad depictions I'm used to seeing around here in New England. Looks like someone was taking notes during the film Dogma when Cardinal Glick introduced the Buddy Christ.

While it may surprise some, I'm with the Marines on the Jesus doll. That's not a toy, it's a prosletyzing tool. Now, if they were to turn down some genuine toy simply because a cross or a star of david was on it, I might have a different opinion. But a Jesus doll is a bit much.

P.S. Excellent Dogma reference, Brian! Great movie.

Gimme five, Brian! Yes, Dogma is a great movie, and I agree with Pat and the Marines. Kids want a toy that's fun, not one that's supposed to teach them something. Sure, the Savior looks buff, but it's hard to imagine Him gunning down rows of plastic dinosaurs while He's saying "Do unto others as you would have done unto you."

Fun fact of the day; some Renaissance painters modeled their Jesus after Cesare Borgia. (Probably one of the most unJesus like figures in world history.)

Went to see "Flushed Away" last night at the movies; very funny. But, all of the previews were Christmas (er... Holiday) movies. It will be interesting to see if "The Nativity Story" is a "typical" Christian movie (i.e. poorly written and directed) or if its well done. The other previews lead me to conclude that "Jingle All the Way" sure started a bad trend (i.e. funny frenetic, and violent Holiday movies or less than top quality)

My beef is always the same; just "too much" of it all.

LOL! Well done post Brian. I think most of us could care less as long as "they" don't put a dent in our holiday spirits.

Woo hoo! More cheers for DOGMA! And most of Kevin Smith's other movies as well.

Hold on here, wait oooooone minute...is it just me, or do those talking Jesus dolls look a LOT like Kevin Smith?

Hmmm......

Yep. Sliding learning tools in under the radar is getting tougher all the time. The kids are hip to it.

e, the Savior looks buff, but it's hard to imagine Him gunning down rows of plastic dinosaurs while He's saying "Do unto others as you would have done unto you."

Oh! You want THIS Jesus action figure!

Favorite gripe of the season...Salvation Army bellringers should appear after Thanksgiving, NOT Halloween!

Tully, that's priceless. I clicked through to see the muslim toys, too. The Allah one cracked me up.

Gotta love the moniker of the shop, too. I believe it's a spoof that's becoming real under reader demand.

But truthfully, don't those talking Jesus dolls look just like Silent Bob?

LOL! Tully, I must say that's a brilliant site. I especially love the Allah doll (or lack thereof). :-)

Reminds me of The New Adventures of Jesus, written as an underground comic back in the day. The artist is a respected professor of Art back in my hometown now.
