November 13, 2006Totten on New Lebanese CrisisTotten on New Lebanese CrisisTotten, of course, being right there, and not being filtered by editors, gives us an excellent grasp on events there. His latest post about the current crisis. UPDATE: Whoopsie! Totten kindly came and pointed out he isn't in Lebanon at the moment. Posted by Jon Kay at November 13, 2006 10:03 PMComments
I would wait and let Iran and Syria push their plot further until it is too obvious to the world community. Remember, Syria calls claims of genocide by Sudan a "western fabrication". This is really beginning to nauseate the EU. I find the thread of comments that follow the first article interesting. Hizb"Allah is facing internal resistance in Lebanon. I posted two links in the McCAin thread. During the run-up to the election here, numerous Lefty blogs were sporting the rumor the US wanted Israel to take on Syria. I think the article is a bit hard on Olmert. It should be clear now that the IDF was only thinking about round one, and is a state within a state for valid reasons. Unfortunately, an eventual pre-emptive strike against Iran by Israel will require a silencing of Hizb"Allah's rockets in Lebanon. Who knows if Assad's new gambit will reverse the Syrian position since 73 and he continues his alliance with terror. I believe this is why rumors float about Israel being much fiercer the next round. Assad will have to watch his ass. The worry here is an all out war in the Middle East. I am concerned about the disposition of US forces in Iraq and the disruption of Gulf traffic. And where the hell are Arab moderates? Seeking nuclear power plants? Who is setting the timetable for events? It should be clear to all, however, that Israel or the West waiting a few years when wmd might be in play is unacceptable. Right now Iran can launch dirty bombs into Israel. My guess is that Iran thinks confrontation should be sooner before Bush and Democrats change the mood. They regard a rejection of Hizb"Allah in Lebanon as not acceptable. Turning Syria may be the key and Israel making obvious preparations to confront Syria in the next round may be the stick. Bush the carrot and Israel the stick? This mess is heating up. Despite the pundits calling Israel's action in Lebanon a failure, events do not suggest this. If anything, our staggering in Iraq is the problem. France, Germany, the EU and moderate Arabs need to wake up. This clock is ticking. Gee….I wonder what Levin, Hagel, Murtha, McCain and Biden think. They wll be arguing over some non-binding BS when the shit hits the fan. Perhaps Baker can save us....geeezzz. Depressing. At times I think if the Arabs were successful in erasing the state of Israel they would not miss a beat and quickly move on to cleansing themselves of the ___________ (Sunni's, Shiites, Turks, Kurds, etc). Tribalism at its finest. Posted by: c3 at November 13, 2006 10:53 PMThanks for the link! I'm not in Lebanon, though, I'm in the US. Posted by: Michael J. Totten at November 14, 2006 03:21 AMYeah, but, Michael, you go there and talk to the real people and get the real facts. That's more than the MSM does. Posted by: Heather at November 14, 2006 09:39 AMStill think Iran has a definite agenda pushing the clock. Yep, I wonder when the build-up of high tech will break loose. Michael, maybe Africa is calling. Yes, far better than MSM. Good stuff. Posted by: Maxtrue at November 14, 2006 09:15 PMWhoops! cfnm blog pure cfnm college
