October 25, 2006October surpriseLink. TRENTON, New Jersey (AP) -- New Jersey's Supreme Court ruled Wednesday that same-sex couples are entitled to the same rights as heterosexual couples.Karl Rove's dream just came true. Posted by Todd Pearson at October 25, 2006 06:10 PM Comments
Marriage, or marriage in all but the label. Hey, what's in a n@me? Those were the options the Jersey Supremes ordered the legislature to produce in their 4-3 opinion. Yep, Rove is doing his Happy Dance in the Campaign War Room.... Posted by: Tully at October 25, 2006 04:09 PMOne of the 3 judges actually thought the opinion didn't go far enough and should have mandated a right to "marriage" for same-sex couples. Posted by: PatHMV at October 25, 2006 04:19 PMIt may be that all 3 of the dissenting judges felt that way, which would actually make it a 7-0 opinion in favor of same-sex unions or marriage. Posted by: PatHMV at October 25, 2006 05:01 PMRepublicans won't be able to get much traction on that issue this year. Social conservatives are still sour that the GOP let the issue die immediately after the 2004 election. Posted by: Staunch Moderate at October 25, 2006 05:05 PMI did see this having a big impact... PS Latest poll: Munsil 24%, Napolitano 58% Big n@mes were right Lets sit this one out, Napolitano to strong (and too moderate) If the Dems win in '08 I smell a cabinet position for Janet. Posted by: c3 at October 25, 2006 05:24 PMIt could serve to counter any Foley effect in non-scandalized races though. Depending on how close a race is, it could kick a few back to the GOP . You can bet the talking heads will be all over this on Monday. Posted by: Jim M at October 25, 2006 06:19 PMIt could serve to counter any Foley effectWas Foley proposing to the pages in the instant messages? ;-) Posted by: c3 at October 25, 2006 07:26 PM It really is hard to tell the full political impact of this, but when the smoke clears, it will be a plus for the GOP. I think it will probably counteract the some of the Foley effect. I really don't think this goes too far beyond Jersey, but it could. Either way, Rove is dancing the dance of joy. As far as the ruling itself, I haven't processsed it all yet. Posted by: Rafique Tucker at October 26, 2006 02:14 AMIt will be a plus for the GOP if it moves turnout, unless the GOP using it to move turnout moves democratic turnout even higher. I hesitate to make predictions based on MY environment, becuase MA is soooooooo democratic. For example in the Healey(R)-Patrick(D) race for governors, multiple polls have routinely shown that voters agree with Healey and not Patrick on at least 2 or 3 of the most prominently discussed issues (enacting a voter-mandated tax rollback, driver's licenses and in-state college tuition for undocumented illegal immigrants), but are going to vote for Patrick anyway. At this point it doesn't even seem close, and liberal democrats seem very energized and motivated, while nationwide I sense doubt and discouragement among GOP supporters, especially those who are not socons. So while this may boost socon turnout, it will do so among that subset of the GOP not given to doubt and discouragement. At this point I do feel that there's a growing nationwide sentiment of doubt about the course chosen by the Bush-led GOP even within his party, and this suggests to me that more Republicans are going to stay home. We'll see. If the democrats take one house or even both by a tiny margin, everyone seems to think that crowns King Log, and I agree. Posted by: bk at October 26, 2006 10:41 AMYou didn't think voters were rational, did you? I hesitate to make predictions based on MY environment, becuase MA is soooooooo democratic. As well you shouldn't. Remember what Tip O'Niell said. Posted by: Tully at October 26, 2006 11:44 AMLessee, the most important issue in America is what? Gay marriage is kind of down on the bottom. A Republican worker who just saw his skilled job outsourced is not thinking a whole lot about gay marriage/divorce. At this point, I think Iraq (I almost said Viet Nam) trumps gay marriage. Posted by: Marc at October 26, 2006 05:14 PMMarc: I agree with you. It won't turn the tide, but it may mitigate the impending Republican disaster somewhat. Posted by: Todd Pearson at October 26, 2006 05:22 PMRove is counting on the vote counters like Diebold. Yup, and he's standing right behind you right now, looking over your shoulder, listening to your phone calls, adding every questionable activity to your black list, ready to destroy your entire life if you step too far out of line. He has glowing green eyes, and 2-inch fangs, and a serpent's tongue, and horns. So help me god, he has horns. He'll kill your dog, strangle your mother, and rape your sister. And he's coming for YOU. Google gave me 791 hits for Darth Rove. 16,300 for "Karl Rove" and Mordor. What a joke. I get a big laugh every time THE EVIL ALL-POWERFUL ROVE is invoked. I look at it as borderline dementia. The fact of the mediocre mental lightweight Bush's 2 terms as president creates so much cognitive dissonance that the most appalled are required to create a super-powered evil genius who will cross any line to guarantee the continued triumph of the dark side. Just remember this, is you are any sort of a sensible democrat, liberal, or both who wants to change things and wants to win. Every time Rove is invoked, it's at the expense of looking in the mirror and thinking hard about why so many people voted for such an embarassing mediocrity as GWB. It's because the democratic alternative was less appealing. Posted by: bk at October 27, 2006 09:41 AMI get a big laugh every time THE EVIL ALL-POWERFUL ROVE is invoked. Don't forget that ROVE is EVOR spelled backwards! (Say it with that Mr. Rone-ry accent and you'll get it...)
