My Congressional district (CA-11) is gerrymandered to a better than 10% Republican advantage. With the result that we generally hear from "our" Congressman maybe once a year, plus a couple of flyers just before elections. But not this year.

Pombo doesn't even appear on the usual Top 20 lists of At Risk Republican seats, but he's simply flooding us with junk mail. Most of it badly written hit pieces -- apparently lack of practice on his part. If I didn't know better (and I don't), I'd think he was seriously worried.

Is anyone else, especially in supposedly non-competitive districts, seeing signs of this sort of thing?

All representitives in New York that are Republicans seemed to be worried. Just look at Peter King. Bloomberg is about the only one who is comfortable and wants the Democratic convention here. When Rudy shows up its usually on Saturday Night Live in drag.

John Shadegg, Rep for north Phoenix, for the second time in a row has no Democratic opposition. Only opponenet is a Libertarian. He has a poster or two just to keep up appearences. No worries here.

I'll bet you've played Moon Valley's course.

NY Post ran an interesting story about the connection between Scientology and Foley. Remember the strange theory about Sandy Burger lifting Clinton's blueprint for the war against Jihadists during the flap in 2003 when he actually did get caught taking documents from a secured archive? I thought Burger was the link between Clinton and Scientology. Anyone have the word on these dots?

I tried posting the following last night but CF not downloading for me...

"A few news items (not to divert the thread)

nothing to do with anything, but interesting

an answer to the Wall Street Journal

so Rumsfeld doesn't know anything?

Here goes NK again

UPDATE: Strange Bedfellows

What, me worry?

mid-term elections

Just some recent links. I heard a Democratic ad from Michigan. Totally over the top. I will spare you the DNC letters. With all the international problems brewing including Darfur, D.R. of the Congo, Georgia v Russia etc. I suppose the Democrats will focus on Iraq and Foley. Why not? They seem to think it is the "perfect storm". No, unfortunately that will come later.

preparing for the future? "

Six Texan Congressional districts (including my restored/new one, Lloyd Doggett's after he moved following the original redistricting) are being voted on as though they were nonpartisan. That's because a judicial reredistricting decision was handed down very recently, well after the primaries. Districts involved include Doggett's, Lamar Smith's, and DeLay's.

The candidates are working to get the word out that a simple party-line vote won't do it for them.

Unfortunately, I think OU is going to win this year's Red River Rivalry.

I hate it when OU wins anything.

I predicted a remarkably ugly campaign season for mid-terms months ago. It's just getting started. It'll get much worse.

Max, if you figure out how to divert an open thread, I will certainly credit you with discovery rights.

Example of more campaign ugly.

Heather, Snowe and Collins have the highest approval ratings of all Senators. They have no worries about challengers! THey're doing something right, eh?

I (1) love The Daily Show and (2) rarely watch the evening news anymore, but I still find this a bit difficult to believe.

The Daily Show is much funnier than traditional newscasts, but a new study from Indiana University says it has the same amount of meat on its bones when it comes to coverage of the news. The brand of news coverage Jon Stewart and the rest of The Daily Show's staff brings to the airwaves is just as substantive as traditional news programs like World News Tonight and the CBS Evening News, according to the study conducted by IU assistant professor of telecommunications Julia R. Fox and a couple of graduate students.
