One must wonder how neccesary this really is.

What would Popeye say?

Depends on the original contamination source. E. Coli O157:H7 is normally associated with cattle and cattle feces. How did it get to the spinach? We may never know.

Maybe someone was using cow chips in an organic fertilizer?

Posted by: Jim M at September 19, 2006 08:06 PM

My understanding was that organic fertilizer use had to be discontinued so many days prior to harvest in order to avoid contamination of the produce.

There could be some ground water contamination. There's a lot of cattle/dairy operations in the Salinas Valley. Could also be someone trying use the cheaper fertilization method.

Truly sad that they decided to plow under the spinach. I don't see why they couldn't have sold it to get canned. The canning process itself is brutal enough on bacteria to eliminate any problems and the product could be sold or given to food banks.

Marcus, that would be a crime against humanity! Think of the children, man!

Marcus; I can see the lawyers ads now "Have you had diarrhea recently? Have you eaten spinach in the last three months? Then call Dewey, Cheatham and Howe..." Posted by: c3 at September 20, 2006 03:19 PM

WaPo says they've narrowed it down to "three counties, Monterey, Santa Clara and San Benito, in and around the greater Salinas Valley."
