The Ever-Renewing Open Thread

You know the drill!

Corey Pavin shot a 26 on the front nine yesterday in some PGA tourney. 8 birdies in 9 holes. that's so rare that I can't even come up with a parallel from another sport. Maybe 9 passes, 8 touchdowns. All in one game.

Check out these wicked fricken cool graphs from fan graphs.

I think that baseball probability graphs are just an amazingly nifty idea. they're a wonderful match of math with the real world.

FP Jr.'s gets a come-on, (or is it come uppance?) from an Australian reporter in this hilarious interview...

OMG, Jean, that's precious!

Posted by: Tully at July 28, 2006 10:33 AM

Glad you like it, Tully! I think it's priceless, myself. :-)

Tully, put me down for a fiver. That guy made my day,

That was a great video, Jean. One of those things that makes you wonder: Why didn't I think of that? While I feel sorry for the brain-washed kids there, it was rather amusing watching them physically intercede to protect Fred from the "pervert".

Oh my! That video was totally hilarious! I know a bunch of people I am going to have to send that link to!

Our house in Hayward, California is very close to closing and we are officially on the road having signed the seller's papers the other day. We are in Sacramento this weekend and then off to Los Angeles, winding up in Killeen, Texas by the end of the week.

We will arrive at our new home in Maine on August 22 (my birthday) if we stick to our current schedule!

i think this is newsworthy enough to get a sponsored thread of its own:

Serious question for constitutionalists and law-geeks (you know who you are!):

What, if any, is the benefit of having Senators elected by state legislatures, as opposed to direct elections like we have now? I hear a lot of people saying that we should return to the old system.

Posted by: Rafique Tucker at July 30, 2006 10:32 PM

Rafique,

I dont see a benefit to that, none at all. Especially since the Senators from RI would almost certainly be hard-line Democrats, not the more center right and center left 2 that we have now. The RI legislature is considered one of the most corrupt in the nation. It is 90% Democrat and at least 50% of them go unopposed each election. The Speaker of the legislature was just fined $500,000 for ethical violations, yet gets to keep his job. He is DEFINATELY not the guy you want choosing a Senator.

Posted by: Dan at July 30, 2006 11:12 PM

Perhaps, but is that reason enough to oppose it? I mean, what if the RI legislature wasn't so corrupt?
I'm against the idea, because I think people ought to directly elect their representatives, but we need to operate from general principles, not simply based on undesirable political results.

Posted by: Rafique Tucker at July 31, 2006 01:40 AM

Most politicians are corrupt to some extent, local politics being the worst. I dont want politicians electing politicians and taking me out of the equation. Im not even too crazy about tyhe eldctoral college. I think it disenfranchises voters. Maybe Bush would have won the final tally against Gore - in New England, I know many many Republicans who dont even bother to vote because, plain and simple, their vote doesnt count here.

What, if any, is the benefit of having Senators elected by state legislatures, as opposed to direct elections like we have now?

The original purpose was to put a "remove" between the passions of the people and the interests of their state governments. The Reps represented the people to the fed gov't, and the Senators represented the state.

I think it was also as close as they could come to their familiar House of Lords, versus the COmmons. Even when you take the royalty out of the equation, familiar structures get mimicked.
