July 26, 2006OversimplificationLink. One thing that would really improve political discourse, and maybe even lead to some better results, would be for all of us to stop oversimplifying issues. Our culture has fallen into a bad habit of trying to turn nearly every subject into a simple duality, with two opposite positions and no gray areas, no third or fourth or fifth possibilities, no troubling ambiguities. It makes life easier in the short run. We don’t have to think, all we have to do is try to yell louder than the obviously evil or crazy people on the other side. But it doesn’t work most of the time. There aren’t many issues that are really that simple, because if they were, they wouldn’t be issues. The only way either liberals or conservatives can turn them into such exercises in obviousness is to omit big parts of the picture, and that guarantees that we’re not seeing it accurately. What a moonbat wanker this guy is. Todd, I'm trying to understand what point you are trying to make with the composition of your post, but I don't get it. The way it's laid out, it sounds like you think the writer of your blockquote is a moonbat wanker. FWIW, I think the blockquote makes an awful lot of sense. Posted by: bk at July 26, 2006 02:21 PMThe comment was a joke, bk. Too subtle, I guess. Posted by: Todd Pearson at July 26, 2006 05:30 PMBy the way, the comment linked to a knee jerk blogger on each side. Malkin calls everybody who doesn't agree with her a "moonbat" and Atrios calls everybody who doesn't agree with him a "wanker." Posted by: Todd Pearson at July 26, 2006 05:32 PMFor the record, I got it Todd. Way to go linking morons from the left and the right on the bottom. They are two of the worst. Posted by: Mathew at July 26, 2006 06:31 PMlet's stop oversimplifying issues into dualities like... i dunno, liberals vs conservatives. there are other voices out there, right? include them. Posted by: bygpowis at July 26, 2006 10:56 PMBygpowis, you have hereby triggered Centerfield's invocation of Tully's first rule: "You complain, you volunteer." In other words, we don't always do requests. We follow where our minds go and post what strikes us as interesting and relevant. If you have some "other voices" in mind please feel free to post some links to these other voices, and tell us why you think they have merit. Then some of us may check them out. That's how it works. If all you want to do is freeload while complaining, you can see how we wouldn't look especially kindly on that. Or, if you'd prefer to take out a paid subscription, I'm sure one of would be willing to hunt down a couple of "other voices." :-) By the way, Tully, I'm not sure that's your first rule. Have you given it a name? I think it deserves one. Posted by: bk at July 27, 2006 08:46 AM |
