We are headed to the North Shore of Lake Superior for the weekend. I'm not sure of the wisdom of following through on this long planned venture, since there is a huge fire raging up there right now. In 1999, the Mother of All Storms blew down millions of trees in the Boundary Waters Canoe Area and we have been waiting for disaster to strike ever since. Smoke from the current fire is clouding the sky as far away as Michigan. I am postıng from Istanbul Spent today lookıng at the Istanbul Archaeologıcal Museum and the remaıns of the Hıppodrome. Lots of fun stuff - I feel lıke Iim trapped ın a book somehow.... The best so far has been a Byzantıne-vıntage
I am SOOOOOO jealous.... Seen video of those cisterns. Incredible stuff. Posted by: Tully at July 21, 2006 12:06 PMTiger fired a 7-under 65 this morning in rd 2 of the British. That's fricken' awesome. Posted by: bk at July 21, 2006 12:14 PMI am sooo jealous too! I just saw a History Channel show on Istanbul and the cisterns were a featured part.. amazing that the city can be on top of all those caverns and not cave in somewhere! One week from today the movers come to take all our furniture to our new home in Maine. My cousin has power of attorney to take care of everything at that end while WE spend nearly all of August doing a zigzag from the Bay Area to LA to Killeen, Texas to Billings, Montana to Calgary, Alberta, across Canada to Ontario and finally through Vermont and New Hampshire to our new home in Presque Isle, Maine. We should be there just a day after my birthday! Can't think of a better birthday present! Posted by: Heather at July 21, 2006 01:20 PMJon, Can you get me a t-shirt that reads "I [heart symbol] Constantinople!"? I haven't been any place especially cool in almost 2 years. I don't know that I've ever been anywhere quite as cool as where you now are. Posted by: WHQ at July 21, 2006 02:31 PMNow that Senator Voinovich has admitted he was wrong on the Bolton nomination can we get a mea culpa from Matthew? Regular readers will recall that Matthew got his knickers in a twist and cried that if Bolton was confirmed some unspecified foreign countries would be offended in some unspecified way and______. The ____part was never explained. Matthew just had a bad feeling. (Rick also whined that Bolton seemed to be a “bully,” but by know I know better than to ask him to admit he was wrong.) Posted by: Alf at July 21, 2006 02:33 PMby now... Posted by: Alf at July 21, 2006 02:34 PMOK, now I'll start taking electric cars a bit more seriously. Posted by: Tully at July 21, 2006 04:07 PMAlf, I don't remember the claim, but the answer is "no." I believe I opposed the Bolton nomination because his professional demeanor was not would I would prefer in a diplomat representing the United States. I don't believe the best way to mediate and negotiate is to start by punching someone in the mouth. I don't see where Bolton has made any significant positive change. The world is, from my point of view, standing by while Iran and North Korea are developing Nuclear Weapons. The coalition in Iraq has gotten smaller, not larger. Bolton's effort to get China to put pressure on North Korea is DOA. In fact, I think diplomatically we are worse off than we were at the start of Bush's second term, and I didn't think that would be possible. Compared to Jeanne Kirkpatrick, Pat Moynihan, and Adlai Stevenson, John Bolton is a light weight. Senator Voinovich is wrong. The President could have done better. My position hasn't changed. My good friend Rick pointed out some excellent points that other very intelligent, viable individuals agreed with about John Bolton. I don't appreciate your labeling of a man's concern about his country's diplomatic position in the world as "whining." Posted by: Mathew at July 21, 2006 04:24 PMWow. I thought it was a joke when the page first opened. We EEs like to joke about Tesla coils transmitting electrical power without wires, so there's an association most people wouldn't share. But Tesla Motors appears to be for real. Posted by: WHQ at July 21, 2006 04:34 PMThey are very much for real, WHQ. Pure Silicon Valley entrepeneurship and off-the-shelf technology. Hired away so many top Lotus design engineers to make it look cool that Lotus made 'em sign a non-poaching agreement or they wouldn't do the manufacturing. I doubt some of their "green" claims, though. They leave out some little details, like the enviro impacts of manufacturing all those Li Ion cells. But that's a seriously impressive bit of sharp thinking and inventive design there, using no real "new" tech at all. And at a development cost of about 1% or less of what any of the big automakers have sunk into much less impressive hybrid and electric products. RE: Bolton--both Rick and Mathew opposed Bolton on the stated grounds that he was "damaged goods" from having been a recess appointment. (They may have had other reasons, but I'm not a psychic.) At least that was the stated reasoning. What I said about Bolton then, in direct response to allegations of Bolton being "damaged goods": Bolton may be "damaged goods" to the Democrats and the media, but no one at the UN really gives a damn. It won't hurt his "effectiveness" a bit. (Whether his personality will hurt his effectiveness is a different debate.) The point may be lost on the public and the partisans that ambassadors don't represent their nation, but their head of state. But it's certainly not a point lost on a building full of ambassadors. Bolton is Bush's representative, not Chris Dodd's, and they'll deal with him as such. He's carrying Bush's baggage, not his own. Nothing has changed to alter that opinion. But I'm willing to get some popcorn and a coke and sit back and watch the movie rerun. Posted by: Tully at July 21, 2006 05:02 PMTully, You have a 100,000 for a car with a one ton battery? Certainly not a solution for the masses. Looks hot, though. Wonder if its grounded for storms. On the home front this and this do not point to a bipartisan compromise. I wonder if the Stem Cell bill had passed, Bush would add it to the list of laws he does not recognize. Expect more leaking with such an uncompromising policy. Lastly, I saw this weeks ago . Then I saw the AP had a breaking story two days ago which mentioned un-named intel sources repeating the same story. I do not buy the Lamont polls. I wonder if Kerry thinks Dig money would have been best spent on Homeland security. What do Kossaks do when they can't fight for Democrats? How about this from the Finacial Times down with Israel I can see Chavez, Kos and the Mullahs all sharing the same talking points. Posted by: Maxtrue at July 21, 2006 05:35 PMMatt, Your reply amuses me. I love the gratuitous Pat Moynihan reference and the appeal to patriotism. Throw in "for the children" and you win the trifecta! You have a 100,000 for a car with a one ton battery? Max, I'm too cheap to buy a NEW car anyway. I just sent a 23 year old Jeep to the knackers and replaced it with a 6 year old minivan, bought at a surplus auction. If I had $100K handy, I wouldn't spend it on a car. But my first PC had 2K RAM and I had to solder the circuit boards myself. My second had an 8088 chip, 512K RAM, and dual 5.25" floppies! Woo hoo! It's a start. In ten years Tesla may own that market. I believe they were talkin' $80K for openers on the first round for the unique sports car. Cheap, compared to a Ferrari. Mathew, while I disagree with you on specifics on Bolton, feeding the trolls is an exercise in futility. Even mentioning that he's obviously missed Moynihan's rather exemplary stint as UN ambassador, one making Moynihan a truly appropriate comparitive, is pointless. Posted by: Tully at July 21, 2006 06:45 PMSince it's an open thread: I finally got all the stuff I need together to start my homebrew ("Winston's," naturally) - I'd been procrastinating about buying the bottles, and I finally found a little place near Bloomington (that is, close enough to drive to within an hour or two in event of an "emergency") that sells all sorts of brewing paraphernalia, and so we start brewing on Saturday. Will it be any good? Will it stink? Couldn't be any worse than Bud (and Winston's will be served in 34oz Grolsch bottles, so even if it sucks, by the end of the first bottle, you won't care much!). As a general rule, I like making things from scratch - I like baking bread, I like cooking, and having grown up in a homebrewing household, this feels very much like taking up the family baton. As you can see, I even whiled away a few minutes making an appropriate bottle label. Any tips? Posted by: Simon at July 21, 2006 08:04 PMI was expecting a joke when I saw that link. I was expecting a car with a huge Tesla Coil on it. Just a little too pricey for me. Not much of a weekend for me. Finishing up Friedman's "The World is Flat" and working on papers and exam prep for next week. I am really just looking forward to August 5th when I can escape to Montana, Wyoming and South Dakota for a week. Especially my three nights in Yellowstone. Lows in the 40's and highs in the high 70's/low 80's look like a wonderful break from the heat and humidity. Posted by: Jim M at July 21, 2006 10:07 PMRandom open thread thoughts: It seems Dan Quayle doesn't care for John Mellencamp's style of music.
Well the UN appears to be sinking with Russian help. Putin flip flops again Of course Ethiopia has sent in troops to defend Somalian government fron the Islamic Jihadists. Maybe Putin will object to this. I saw today numerous "Liberal" blogs in a frenzy over Bush's use of the S word. Yes, a significant issue with everything else on the table. Posted by: Maxtrue at July 22, 2006 11:07 AMFor the life of me, I cannot dind one reason to get even remotely upset over Bush's off-the-cuff remark. For Heaven's sake, it was one curse word. I knew the media, with its tragic lack of priorities, would make this nonstory into to front-page news, but has the hard-Lefty blogosphere nothing better to do? Posted by: Rafique Tucker at July 22, 2006 11:57 AMGiven the level of language in use in much of the blogosphere, any whining about a single scatalogical utterance by anyone seems a wee bit, shall we say, hysterical? Posted by: Tully at July 22, 2006 12:17 PMI'd love to hear some thoughts on this ruling regarding the 16 year old boy who is being forced by the courts to undergo chemo. I can't find the link to this blog on the homepage of centrist coalition. Why do you hide this blog? With proper medical treatment of Hodgkins at that age of onset, the kid has an 80 to 90 per cent chance of a long-term remission/cure. With the BS "treatment" his parents had him in, he was quite likely to die before ever getting old enough to legally make the decision himself. Essentially the court ruled that the parents were not free to commit negligent homicide, or, if you prefer, allow their minor child to commit suicide by avoiding effective treatment. I suppose if it really upsets the boy that much he can just kill himself when he turns 18, and keep it all nice and legal. But if he doesn't get real treatment rather than holistic quackery soon he will die, and his parents will be responsible for that avoidable death. The courts have a reponsibility to stop the commission of that crime. Posted by: Tully at July 22, 2006 05:15 PMTully: Essentially, I agree with you, that as a matter of fact, these parents are morally negligible for allowing their son to in effect, commit de facto suicide. This ruling does run the risk of setting a dangerous legal precedent, either way it turns out. On one hand, if the ruling stands, you're effectively granting the state the authority to intervene in the private medical decisions of the parents and child. On the other hand, if this ruling is struck down, aren't they in effect saying that anything goes, that it would be perfectly legal for parents to allow their children to drink rat poison, if the child wanted to? It's funny, though. If this were to go to the Supreme Court, and the ruling was upheld, I'd say they'd be morally and constitutionally bound to reconsider the issue of parental notification with regards to abortions, hmm? It's wrong to let child a choose his or her own treatment, but it's A-OK to allow young girls to have abortions without their parents' consent? Nuh-uh, that's ass-backwards. Posted by: Rafique Tucker at July 23, 2006 12:25 AMOne of the lawyers will correct me if I'm wrong, but I don't think there's any precedent at all being set there. Laws differ from state to state of course, but this is obvious medical neglect on the part of the parents. The article doesn't note that these parents are citing a religious exemption, which might give them some leverage to argue. But without that, the parent's right to refuse medical treatment is outweighed by the child's right to live. Their failure to allow proper and competent treatment is clearly neglect, and with a likely outcome of life with proper treatment and a certain outcome of death without, it's a negligent homicide in process. There is a duty to intervene on behalf of the child. Posted by: Tully at July 23, 2006 01:37 AMYes, I'd have to agree. Certainly in the moral sense, and in the legal sense as well. Posted by: Rafique Tucker at July 23, 2006 02:13 AMthe parents and child can easily get around this all with emancipation, which, if their appeal fails, is probably their next step. Then the idiot kid can do whatever he wants Posted by: Dan at July 23, 2006 08:00 AMNot so easy. They'd have to convince the state to agree to emancipation, now that the state has acquired partial custody and a competent court has re-affirmed that partial custody. In Virginia, the criteria for emancipation of a minor include: "if child is an active member of the military; if the child has entered into a valid marriage; if the parent and child acquiesce that the child can live apart from the parent and that the minor is or is capable of supporting himself and competently managing his own financial affairs." This kid is too young to join the military and would fail the physical anyway, and the state already has partial custody, and is unlikely to acquiesce on competency, or co-sign the petition. That leaves marriage, and the age of consent for marriage in Virginia is 18, and the state is also unlikely to sign off on a marriage under their partial custody rights. Posted by: Tully at July 23, 2006 10:53 AMInteresting news note This seems part of a more dangerous brew involving attempts by the West at prevention and self-defense. One take on ground realities Another take on how the dynamics of entrapment Let's hope it fruitful week. Assuming a conspiratory link to Somalia, there is quite a lot of force facing off presently in opposing the common thread of Islamic extremism. Imagine we pack it in and let the dice roll. What will we tell our great grand children? I think this situation is not going to go away. Beware international third parties promising resolutions. For American politics, this is the road to the White House in 2008. Frankly, the health of the ecomonic engine required to sustain action worries me. The costs of force are enormous and they are only surpassed by the "projected" cost of defeat.
The winner and runner-ups* for the 2006 Bulwer-Lytton are in! Woo hoo! [*--"I know what you're thinking, punk," hissed Wordy Harry to his new editor, "you're thinking, 'Did he use six superfluous adjectives or only five?' - and to tell the truth, I forgot myself in all this excitement; but being as this is English, the most powerful language in the world, whose subtle nuances will blow your head clean off, you've got to ask yourself one question: 'Do I feel loquacious?' - well do you, punk?"] Posted by: Tully at July 24, 2006 12:05 AMAlso not a lawyer, and also reasonably sure that this is not setting a precedent. I recall multiple cases in the past where the state has stepped in when parents' medical care decisions threaten the safety of a child. If the treatment that parents are eschewing has a solid demonstrable efficacy and the chosen treatment does not, the state usually steps in and dictates care in cases where a suit is brought. At least based on what generally bubbles onto the news. The level of efficacy is important. If the refused treatment has a high chance of success, the state tends not to be tolerant of parents choosing iffy alternatives. However, if the efficacy of the refused treatment is not high, but simply the highest from a series of treatments that all have a low likelhood of a positive outcome, then the state backs away. So, for example, if a child with cancer has undergone a series of treatments that have failed, and the child has suffered quite a bit, and none of the available treatments if more likely than not to lead to success, the state generally won't force a child to undergo, say, an experimental, unpleasant, or drastic treatment that's a longshot. Posted by: bk at July 24, 2006 09:08 AMThe level of efficacy is important. Yep. It sure is to the courts. Posted by: Tully at July 24, 2006 09:34 AMSaw the Hummer "Reclaim Your Manhood" commercial last night, and my gut still hurts from laughing. Incredibly stupid. If you haven't seen this one, it's a guy shuffling his tofu and organic veggies across the grocery checkout, then gazing enviously at the ribs and beer and chips of the guy behind him. He gets that "where the hell did my testosterone go?" look on his face, and runs out of the grocery store to go buy a Hummer (No no, the CAR, you filthy-minded preverts! What, you thought it was a Clinton joke?) after which he is lauded for reclaiming his manhood. Well, almost. The message I carried away from it (after I quit LMAO) was that if you're REALLY insecure in your masculinity and have more money than brains, you really really need a giant mechanical surrogate penis. The glaringly obvious subtextual message is that you'll never get a a blow job unless you eat lots of meat AND drive a giant mechanical surrogate penis. (OK, so it IS vaguely Clintonian...) Stupid on so many different levels that it's hilarious. Posted by: Tully at July 24, 2006 10:18 AMYeah, I saw that this weekend too, and also found it to be astoundingly tone-deaf. I mean, who wants to be the guy who is so ashamed of eating tofu that he has to buy a hummer to compensate? Exactly what portion of the potential market for humvees is going to be moved by this ad? If your ad explicitly suggests that hummers are for men who feel insufficiently masculine, aren't you letting the cat right out of the bag? Aren't you much better off suggesting that this vewhicle is something that only a real man can handle, and that if you are a real man, you should feel uncontrollably compelled to buy one? And that if you don't, you're a wuss. Instead, this commercial suggests that Hummers are for men who feel like wusses. It's a cure, in other words. I just don't see how this ups hummer sales. I have contemplated making up some bumper stickers and placing them on strangers humvees. They'd say "My penis is so small that I had to pay 60 grand for a hummer." Posted by: bk at July 24, 2006 01:47 PMThat Hummer commercial is about as stupid as the female version: "Get your girl on." "Yeah? Well now WE are first" and you can almost hear the "bitch" at the end. The problem is, the commercials work. After all, we ARE talking about them, right? AND we remember the product! Posted by: Heather at July 24, 2006 02:16 PMEffective like that case of hives--I remember it too! Seriously, the obvious demographic aim is people with self-esteem and image adequacy deficiencies and too much money. As far as it works, good for Hummer. Someone's going to get the sucker money. Posted by: Tully at July 24, 2006 03:00 PMI wonder what the commercial for the CVN-21 looks like. Are there such commercials designed for Congress? I like the part about the laser cannons and electro-rail systems. Talk about steroids. Carrier protection is optional! Posted by: Maxtrue at July 24, 2006 08:25 PMGood design! Good design! Well done!
