It's up to 147 now. 400-plus wounded. The horrormof this goes without saying. The terrorists believed responsible are linked with al-qaeda. This appears to be India's 9/11. While they have some ties to Al-Qaeda, this was probably not something directed by them. If I recall, this is not the first time they have attacked the rail system. It's unknown whether they were suicide bombs or just planted. I've got a roundup here. There will be time to blame the guilty and ferret out the causes tomorrow. They give a series of reasons for the popularity of Muslim extremism there. One fascinating reason is that the Pakistani public school system is designed to distribute patronage to Mussharaf-supporters rather than education. The result is that the madrassas are where you have to send your kid if you want him to learn anything. Another interesting bit from the article: if you are a gov't-supporting tribe in Pakistan, and you sack and loot a village, the penalty is $60,000.
We have 10 contractors from Bombay (programmers) who were all so distraught over this they had to leave for the day yesterday after the news broke. You might be surprised to know that members of the hard-line Shiv Sena party, which is a Hindu Nationalists party whose goal it to make Hindu a national state religion, took to the streets on Sunday after a memorial statue of party founder Bal Thackeray’s late wife was "desecrated" overnight with mud smeared on it. The Hindus started to go around and vandalize Muslim homes and businesses around Mumbai and I imagine that this smaller dust up led to the retaliation. I’m not picking sides in this fight since both sides of this issue, Which pre-dates Al-Qaeda by … oh … 250 years, is on of those nasty disputes that spans generations and both sides have much blood on there hands. Terrorists can go online and create a technologically efficient plan to strike many significant places causing panic, economic damage, retribution and potential large-scale human losses. What have we done in less than twenty years after the Fall of the Wall to secure our Liberal victory? The Status Quo will crumble. There will be more terrorism in the new asymmetry of the world. While it is imperative we enlarge our bonds and affiliations with those we share our Common Cause and Constitutional Faith, it is equally Supreme that we prevent adverse Points of Irreversible Consequence and prepare for the escalation and threats that are sure to come. It is interesting that Russia, England, the US, Israel, China and India are among those nations that espouse the right of pre-emption. The deeper question I think, is what right does any nation have in aiding those most linked to the recognized targets of pre-emption? Who helped those that killed in Mumbai, Egypt, Tel Aviv, New York, Amman, Madrid and London? You cannot have it both ways. Don't threaten force (pull back) AND don't demand sanctions and penalties for clearly illegal behavior? I think that is the present Democratic position of many Liberals. If the West took that position now I fear we will all wake up one day and lament the mess we find ourselves in from our in action and isolationism. Then will we send our military into greater perils? Yes, the Status Quo is crumbling and welcoming the militarization of Japanese and German foreign policy is not so far fetched at this rate.... Or will we all get used to more Mumbais?
