July 06, 2006Penn 13thWe've received an email from a Centrist who is supporting Raj for Congress. You may remember Raj from his being a candidate on The Apprentice, Donald Trump's reality show, a while back. Raj says
And there is the Raj Blog. The incumbent, Democrat Allyson Schwartz, is a member of the House New Democrat Coaltion, a group of Centrist Democrats, and emphasizes bipartisanship in her bio. The Centrist Coalition takes no position on this race between two moderate candidates. Readers are invited to compare and contrast. Comments
A race between moderates? I'd call that a win/win scenario. Posted by: Tully at July 6, 2006 11:37 AMThey both look good from here, good enough that I wish I lived in a district with a choice like that. The challenger is sketchier on positions, as always. The incumbent looks like she truly understands the meaning of "constituent service," something that incumbents in tight districts seem to understand SO much better than incumbents in "safe" districts.... Posted by: Tully at July 6, 2006 09:45 PMI've looked over both candidates, and I have to say I'm far more impressed with the Democrat than the Republican in this race. As I've just noted over at Stubborn Facts, Raj strikes me as the archetype of the guy playing all the political tricks while loudly proclaiming that he's not a politician. I don't see much there, there. He's on a mission of self-aggrandizement, not public service. His issue statements could be taken directly from the playbook for appealing to the "socially liberal, fiscally conservative, disgusted with politics" voter. "I will fight to clean up the backroom deals" does not show much insight or thought. And what exactly will he do to "make our communities walkable and green"? Congresswoman Schwartz, on the other hand, has clearly devoted some thought to complex issues and has not adopted the knee-jerk Democratic talking points as solutions. Her statements on key issues reveal concrete proposals, not just "good jobs at good wages" fluff. She advocates adopting many of the recommendations of the 9/11 Commission for homeland security matters. Her healthcare proposals have targeted specific problems; she doesn't just toss up her hands and call for universal health care. Some of her proposals are even market-oriented! I'm sure I don't agree with everything she says, but if I were a voter in the Pennsylvania 13th, this would be an easy choice for me. I'm not going to support a guy just because he's "hip" and has a blog. Still, something about Raj just really rubs me the wrong way. I generally don't trust young guys running on a platform of "I'm not a politician".
