I remember installing Red Hat 9 a few years ago, and just being blown away by how smooth and slick it all looked, especially compared to the SuSE installer, YAST. If it's better than that,it's impressive. The last year or so, I've got to admit that I've been less involved on the linux side of things, but having spent a couple of hours gaping at the horror of the Windows Vista beta last week, I'm definitely back in the market for a Linux desktop.

I dont know why Linux is still even part of our existence now that Apple has switched to a Unix base. Mac OSX is everything that Linux had hoped to be. If you hate Windows, consider a Mac.

Oh, that wasn't sarcasm? It seems to me that OSX is just a more stable way of saying Windows. The interface is - like Vista - unremittingly horrible. Everything useful and functional is buried under layer after layer of horrible "prettified" menus; it is an OS designed by interior designers rather than engineers, and it shows. Even were they not priced out of the wazoo, there is no way I would ever, ever consider going to a Mac.

Ubuntu is wonderful--in part because they send out CDs absolutely free, with no shipping costs.

I installed it and had absolutely no problems or questions. It just worked--the install, printing, internet, etc. Here's how it went.

Also, you make a very good point about Ubuntu being for desktops. This is important since that's where most of the users are.

Simon, I used Redhat for 9 years, starting with 5.2. Unfortunately, v9 was the last "just works" version. That's how I came to try Ubuntu - I was unhappy with Fedora.

Still using v9 at work. I was supposed to be on Enterprise by now, but it takes a lot longer to solidify than good ol' v9.

I do say that much of my disdain for non-Windows base platforms probably comes from my "comfort zlevel" - I can fix Windows whereas Unix-based platforms fall outside my logic zone. I do however, like the portability of the MacOS - you can completely screw up the opoerating system on a Mac and just copy the OS files over and it works again. You do that with Windows, you have to reinstall every single program from scratch.
