June 23, 2006Al-Queystone Cops?Knucklehead Terrorist Wannabees Nabbed in Florida A federal indictment against seven men revealed Friday details of what the government said was a terrorists' plan to "kill all the devils we can," including blowing up Chicago's Sears Tower. This story makes me fear the possibility of domestic islamic terrorism LESS. Yes, we must remain vigilant. But there's nothing wrong with being a little heartened by what the years since 9/11 have told us about just how substantive a threat domestic islamic terrorism is. IMO, there's some reason to think that there really just aren't many determined, clever islamic fundamentalists who are living on American soil and have the means and the ability to wage jihad. Or if we do have many such folk, then they are very, very stealthy and very, very patient. I realize mileage varies on this. Just my $.02. Posted by Brian Keegan at June 23, 2006 02:01 PMComments
The "outside" terrorist threat is a real one, but the wannabees are a scary thought due to their possible numbers. It's the Timothy McVie's and Unabombers that worry me. How many of these types are closer to putting their deranged thoughts into action because of the situation we are in now. Something like - Nobody appreciates me, but if I can pull off an Oklahoma City type bombing there will be 10million Muslims cheering me. Who knows what weird thoughts lead to those types of things. Copycat stuff, but now they have a "cause" (even if they had no religious affiliations previous). High school rampages, shopping mall killings, college campus car assults. Not satisfied with your life? Underloved and overlooked? Uncle BinLaden is willing to give you the respect you deserve if you will do just this one little thing. Not something I worry about a lot, but before 9/11 these types were pretty much on their own. Society frowned on mass killings. It might be different now that they have a cheering crowd. Posted by: Dennis at June 23, 2006 04:00 PMRight. While it's true that many of those caught will turn out to be bumbling fools with a cause, excessive zeal, turned towards ending innocent lives is dangerous. We should never be so afraid as to hide in our beds, but as Brian said, we should always be vigilant.
