Dear Pat, -- As one who has time to read very few blogs, I especially appreciate the UNPREDICTABILITY of views incorporated within Centerfield; that's one of the reasons I'm sorry to see you'll be posting some of your best work elsewhere. I am not close enough to the inner workings of Centerfield to know if you sat down with Rick & Bill and tried to work out a way for you and your colleagues to continue making it your main writing vehicle without compromising your integrity. This is only to say that I hope you had that dialogue with them (wrenching though it might have been) -- a real dialogue, not just one or two less-than-satisfactory exchanges -- before deciding to start another blog. The center is (or should be) SUBSTANTIALLY AND PROUDLY MORE DIVERSE than the extremes, and Centerfield should seek to model that.

Thanks for your kind comments, and for asking the question which allows me more of an opportunity to explain my own thinking. Speaking for myself (and probably the others, but I'll let them chime in on their own), I've been very proud to be a poster on Centerfield for the last couple of years. The exposure to different voices and the challenge of backing up my opinions when confronted, have been tremendously positive experiences.

This isn't a matter of a any sort of "split", just wanting to have a different focus, or a different vehicle which is our own. We have not, in fact, had any conversations with Bill or Rick, because it's not about that at all. We are not leaving because we are tired of bickering or anything like that at all.

When I post on Centerfield (the front page, particularly, more so than the comments), I must to some extent remember that I am posting not just in my own name but as a representative of the organization which sponsors it and which has generously provided me the platform on which to speak. This isn't any sort of pernicious censorship (and let me add for clarity that nobody from the Centrist Coalition has ever even questioned anything I've written outside of just debating it like we do everything), just a matter of being a responsible participant in a group activity. For instance, if I want to post a picture and brief commentary on some aspect of "life in the street" as Ann Althouse often does, that would be out of place here. Likewise, if I want to say "I'm a Republican and proud of it, and here's why", the front page of Centerfield would not be the right place for me to do that.

The Kossacks actually have an area of their blogroll reserved for "Kos Alumni". Having learned to fly there, they've spread their wings to blog on their own. We're not flying away completely; we'll still be here arguing plenty... I think we all have too much to say to restrict ourselves to just one forum!

Think of us as a spin-off, "Mork and Mindy" to Centerfield's "Happy Days", or "The Jeffersons" to Centerfield's "All in the Family". Of course, maybe nobody will come follow us, and we'll be "The Ropers" to Centerfield's "Three's Company"...

I won't pretend I won't miss that share of your energy that you used to put into Centerfield. And, well, what Mark said.

But I do wish you well. Good luck! I'll be watching you. So be careful about straying too far from the straight and narrow....

Jon, thank you so much, that really means a lot. Actually, you don't know this, but you were responsible for my discovery of Centerfield. Two years ago, you posted a thread on how the International Olymics Committee are Minions of Evil, in which you quoted from a comment I made over on Slashdot. When I started following blogs during the presidential election not long thereafter, I searched for my name, found your post, and started lurking.

As best I can tell from a bleary-eyed Yahoo search, I think I made my first comment on March 2, 2005. My first front-page post came 2 months later, on June 10, when I posted Debunking creationism. Thanks to Rick for taking a chance giving me first-page privileges when I had made my Republicanism clear from the beginning!

I've enjoyed very much meeting and arguing with everybody here. If it weren't for Centerfield, I would have given up blogging after being (accidentally) run out of RedState during the Terri Schiavo tragedy. This is a great community.
