June 17, 2006Democracy Beats Both Right and Left in Nepal?This looks almost too good to be true. Both the Nepalese Maoists and the Nepalese King who ascended the throne who probably killed to get there and then worked to deconstitutionalize the monarchy seem to have thrown in the towel in favor of democracy. Joe Gandelman has an excellent, linkful post on the subject. Of course, the actors involved have to actually carry through on this agreement for peace to return to Nepal. But it's interesting that two authoritarian movements would even at least apparently bow to a democratic one. Wonder what happened... UPDATE: Swaraaj Chauhan wrote those posts, not Joe Gandelman. Naive wishful thinking. The Maoists are happy to exploit a temporary Democracy to transition towards their killing fields style utopia. The Nazis didn't give up their ideology and aspirations when they were Democratically elected to a coalition government. Maoists are extreme and violent enough to merit the analogy. That's certainly how it worked here and in Europe, I certainly remember reading about us voting for Stalin for President. Oh, wait. Well, the King of Nepal would love you as a subject. Too bad he's out of power. George III devoutly wished for more like you as well. Just because a nation CAN screw things up doesn't mean they will do so. I think they at least deserve credit for standing up to their authoritarian King. It's more than the Iraqis have been doing. And THEY have US doing most of the dirty work. I do agree, though, that if they do succeed it will likely be due to forces OTHER than the Maoists. If I read the situation correctly, the Maoists are having to go along because the King been forced to go along as well. No one wants to be outside of parliament after the people demand one. Will they succeed? Depends on their Constitution and election law. The Nazi example isn't quite apt, because in this case the Head of State has been stripped of his extraordinary powers, and he'd have been unlikely to use them in favor of the Maoists anyway.
