June 16, 2006Tank Gawd Izz Fryday - the Darth SideThe weekly free for all. I actually have a few minutes free.... Posted by Marcus at June 16, 2006 02:47 AMComments
Between new edit jobs at home (!) instead of flying out to Denver, new clients and a new consulting job (how do you archive 13,000 3/4" video tapes is various states of decay)I also was wrestling with the perennial dillma, what to do for my girlfriend on our 3rd anniversary. Year one - pearl necklace, year two matching pearl earrings. Fortunately for me, my past SMPTE membership came in handy - a very rare glimpse behind the inner workings of the new George Lucas facility in San Francisco's Presidio. Up to this point there had been no tours except for a few VIP's. This was a group of about 50 fellow TV and film techs who got an incredible 4 hours of presentations and tours. The upshot is my girlfriend was totally wowed - she is a fellow geek and sci-fi fan - to the point where she ignored her multiple aches and pains (various health conditions) and had a grand time. If I have time there are more details.
Coulter - ignore (always ignore crazy people on the streeet unless you are a safe distance away), Al-zaq - not much will be different, Bush in Iraq - stunt (would be called the same by the GOP if it was a Dem president so no whining), sham Iraq vote in Congress - sham, Rove - why isn't Novak in jail for treason? Posted by: Marcus at June 16, 2006 03:05 AMSorry, Marcus; as Rude Pundit says, Coulter ain't goin' away; those who pay her need her too much. But the link about the naked guy is pretty funny. Posted by: Blue Jean at June 16, 2006 11:09 AMI'm envious Marcus. I've heard that Lucas' home and facilities are full of fine woodwork (my profession). I'm betting this site is full of SF fans. 'What if' breeds a different sort of intellectual cat. "Illegal aliens" conjures a different picture to me than the Mexican border sometimes :) Off to the golf course this weekend, weather permitting. My game has been steadily improving and I plan to break 80 for the first time. (A plan I've had for longer than I care to admit) Good luck to me. Posted by: Dennis at June 16, 2006 11:49 AMWell, you'll all be pleased and likely quite excited to know that I have just finished initialing the routing slips attached to the April 2006 Journal of Protective Coatings and Linings and the March/April 2006 volume of Compliance Magazine. I can now commit suicide with no regrets. Oh wait, the TCP reports... Posted by: WHQ at June 16, 2006 11:51 AMI am thrilled and delighted by this week's 5-4 ruling in Hudson v. Michigan, holding that evidence obtained in a warranted search need not be suppressed if the police's conduct under the knock-and-announce rule was questionable. All the indications are that, until Justice Alito's confirmation and the subsequent reargument, this case would have come out the other way, and there is some reason to believe that it would not only have come out the other way, but that Justice Breyer's dissent would have been the opinion of the court. The tide is distinctly turning. Posted by: Simon at June 16, 2006 11:54 AMThe technology sector of the economy takes an interesting turn: I'm jealous of your tour, Marcus. OTOH, I've met Harryhausen and already have his signature. :-) Posted by: Tully at June 16, 2006 12:42 PMI do not have a problem with no-knock searches; but there better be huge penalties for the screw ups. There are certain departments where I use to live in Central Florida that do a horrible job of verifing their paper work. Heck, I had some officers show up at my apartment to do a search for drugs. They were in the wrong apartment complex. I would have hated to think what kind of hell I would have gone through if they had done a no-knock and rushed in on me and started sacking my apartment. They did not realize until they were about to show me the warrant. Posted by: Jim M at June 16, 2006 02:46 PMThere's a good post and thread over at Legal Fiction on the Hudson ruling. Simon, you could have some fun with the lefties over there. The blog's author supports the decision, but normally can't stand Scalia. The commenters are generally young liberal lawyer types. Posted by: WHQ at June 16, 2006 02:52 PMThe case Simon's referring to was not a no-knock case. It was an attempt to supress evidence on the grounds that the police did not wait long enough for the defendant to answer the door before they kicked it in. That they found exactly what the warrant listed (guns and drugs) didn't help the defendant. But the police did knock, and did announce themselves. I'm against unannounced no-knock police entries for anything other than life-threatening exigent circumstances. They're just a damn bad idea. Posted by: Tully at June 16, 2006 03:02 PMFollowing on from the Stephanie Herseth love-in this week, I note this survey reported in the blogometer. "MyDD.com . . . surveyed 1936 members of MoveOn.org's membership roster" and reported the favorable / unfavorable ratings of 24 Dems. Herseth came in dead last in this group, with a 6% favorable / 1% unfavorable rating. But look at it this way: first, the fact that a relatively conservative (or at least, Blue Dog) first-term Congresswoman from a relatively minor state (a red state at that) is even on the list is quite impressive. And second, this is a list from the self-styled "netroots", which is to say, the ones who are REALLY crazy, which means that if Herseth's profile were similar in the wider world, her favorable ratings are likely to be much higher. Speculation: Schweitzer / Herseth '12 - the ticket I'd love to vote against. ;) Posted by: Simon at June 16, 2006 05:08 PMTully I agree with your sentiment which seems to oppose Scalia's view on privacy. Without O'Conner, Alito and Roberts have reversed a ruling going back to 1914. The specific case is not one for the no-knock rule. I wonder if you shot a no-knock officer entering your home without a hello, whether Scalia would support your "right" to blast him. A solution would be better view of paperwork, tougher penalities for screwing up a no-knock, and a scale for entry with suspected dangerous felons exempt from the knock. On another note for the week..... A centrist criteria of privacy A centrist criteria for prevention and pre-emption A centrist criteria for "support" of terrorism A centrist criteria for the "Constitutional" balance between democracy and government...... Without any criteria other than civility, Centrist Coalition signifies what? I find it strange that a blog which has defended Iraq by the validity of "tactics designed to protect Liberal Democracy" and then not apply this same reasoning to Iran. That Iran is not Iraq or North Korea is hardly an answer in itself (not that you said this). Has blow back arrived? Have the Republicans shot their load at the lesser threat, while everyone has taken advantage of our trillion dollar day care to form counter alliances and strategies, while in denial about the clock ticking at our approaches? Posted by: Maxtrue at June 16, 2006 07:14 PMDennis The woodwork is worthy craftsmanship. Dark panelling in the main theatre evokes the mission style, one of the lobbies had elegant and simple bookshelves filled with books, models and almost reminds me of the lobby of the Ahwanee Hotel in Yosemite. The Lucas Arts audio rooms are nicely panelled. There is a LOT of conccrete. In fact they tore down Letterman Hospital, used the material in an onsite plant to produce their own concrete. They spent months pouring the crete. total cost 350 million, but when you think of it, considering the size and all the modern infrastructure, it actually makes sense. I wonder if you shot a no-knock officer entering your home without a hello, whether Scalia would support your "right" to blast him. Don't know about Scalia, but common law does and many states do by specific statute. "Castle" doctrine. One of several reasons no-knock's a really bad idea and should be restricted to those exigent circumstances I mentioned. You kick in the door of a residence unannounced at 3am and the next thing to go through your mind may well be a load of 000 buckshot. That you might be wearing a badge and holding a warrant won't make their actions illegal. There's a legitimate presumption of self-defense on the part of the resident. Posted by: Tully at June 17, 2006 12:02 PMMeant to note--police didn't have to kick in Hudson's door. It was unlocked. They announced themselves and then walked right in. Posted by: Tully at June 17, 2006 12:05 PMOther then the scare the heck factor out of someone, I have to say that it does make no sense to knock down an unlocked door. That is something out of the Three Stooges. Unless the police thought the suspect was standing behind the door with a gun ready to shoot, why would they want to risk injury on bashing an unlocked door. Posted by: Jim M at June 17, 2006 01:23 PMJim -- When there are real bad guys behind the door, hard-core crack dealers, etc., then knocking can give them time to both dispose of the evidence (sometimes, the cops have someone sneak under the house to disconnect the toilet drain before trying to enter) or to grab their guns and prepare to resist. I agree that it should be done extremely rarely, and only when they have carefully thought out the risks and how confident they are in their intelligence which led to the warrant. We've see the tragic consequences in England several times in the last year of cops killing innocent people because of bad reactions to bad intelligence in anti-terror investigations. Posted by: PatHMV at June 17, 2006 01:41 PMI mean that they simply turned the knob and walked right into Hudson's abode after announcing themselves. They didn't break the door because there was no need. Posted by: Tully at June 17, 2006 01:41 PMThere's a man on death row in Mississippi as the result of exactly the kind of surprise entrance, bad intel and investigation, and incompetent law enforcement that we should worry about. Posted by: Tully at June 17, 2006 01:55 PMExcellent link on the Maye story, Tully. It's a terrible travesty of justice, and I've never seen anybody from the state respond to the accusations at all. Posted by: PatHMV at June 17, 2006 02:19 PMI assumed such "rights" exist concerning entering without identifying oneself. Law enforcement runs a risk by knocking on dangerous felons and not knocking on well armed libertarians. In regard to my other question repeated on the Iran thread, here's this . Again, I do not see how it is consistent that invading Iraq was valid given a criteria from A to Z, and then when it comes to Iran (the greater threat) we just back off. Even Blix cuts Negroponte's estimate in half. I do not think Bush's offer was capitualtion. Perhaps this topic isn't drawing the critical discourse it deserves. As Bobby asked weeks ago, what Iranian action should warrant US action? Have we given up on sanctions because of the gas price increases? What principles should guide us on Iran? What signal does it send when we do little while adversaries reach for de facto right to possess nukes and other wmd AND threaten neighbors? Iran is far more a litmus test for Western Hegemony than Iraq. Meanwhile, Russia will build machine guns for Chevez to export and jets to exert his neosocialist hegemony over South America. I thought centrists are concerned about threats to Liberal Democracy, or has Bush weakened our ability to react? Wasn't this the warning by many centrists before Iraq? Posted by: Maxtrue at June 19, 2006 05:10 PMjeez, you'd think Al Gore would not miss this one little thing on Countdown tonight. If I have time - not - I;ll look at the transcript
I know he's passionate about the subject and I don't expect perfection but still, that kind of mistake causes people on the histrionic Fox network to focus on a mistake or misunderstanding rather than what's happening.
Al Gore is a nut, a complete nut, he picked this issue because the junk science idiots have every nations governbment believing that the world is going to burn to a crisp in the next 20 minutes. The facts of the matter are, yes, global warming HAS happened. The earth is a shocking 0.4 degrees Farenheight warmer than it was in 1950. Carbon dioxide, blah blah blah... scientist have also proved through Antartic ice drilling that this is like the 3rd or 4th time in the past 2000 years this has happened. Same with Carbon Dioxide levels etc - I guess all those people in the Dark ages should have stopped using so much Hair Spray and they never would have died off and caused the destruction of the universe. Posted by: Dan at June 20, 2006 07:53 AMHey, I just attempted to write a reply to RR on the Flag amendment issue, but it indicates a window for posting of 7 days. THe original post was the 14th Jun, and it's only 20 June today. What am I missing here? Any way, don't mean to make you reach two posts at the same time, RR, but I spent a bit writing the following and I intend to put it somewhere. It's about the whole, "decking," thing:
You know, since I've been checking this site out I do have to say that I have had to constantly question my assessment of what Centrism really is. I do have to admit that my preconcieved notion is that it endorses, "getting along," over just about anything else. So when I heard about people getting decked, I couldn't even fathom that it was said. I get my general concept of Centrism by looking at the political leadership that tend to appeal to it. I see the Concord Coalition and the DLC when I think Centrism. I suppose there is nothing here that should presuppose an absence of vim and vigor, but the nationalism that is endorsed along these lines tends not to make a distinction as what is outside of nation. Here, nation is synonymous with UNITY. Personally, sometimes I think the only way that unity is possible in this country is when the nation faces an external threat. But again under Centrism, it appears to me that nothing is outside of nation. Nothing to, "deck." But perhaps that's only my current understanding. Posted by: Cavalier829 at June 20, 2006 03:41 PMFrankly Danyou just illustrated teh nuttiness of your side. A little Brazilian (hard shell) with an almond center. As for the seemingly miniscule air temperature increase, here's something to think about and thanks to the internet you can look up the data you need for your answer. Find out the mass of the atmosphere and then the calories needed to heat that mass. Should be an interestingly large number. You are intelligent enough to do the math? Here's another. The average ocean temperature has risen about 1 degreee centigrad in the past entury. One of the theories is that the oceanis absorbing a large amount o f heat from the atmosphere. Find the area of the ocean, figure a depth of 500 meters than figure out the volume of water from that. Then figure out the mass. Find out how many calories it takes to heat up that much water 1 degree C. No your straw man of burnt to a crisp won't happen -(gawd such a lame-ass argiment anyway, worthy of that stupid git O'Reilly) but what does happen is that ocean levels are going up, warmer temperatures mean stronger storms, warmer polar temeratures means wilder variations in climate. BTW, when your body temerature varies, even by half a degree, don't you just feel like shit?
Marcus, I am not suggesting the the earth isnt warming, of course it is. But it has been proven that, in fact, this is not a new phenomena. It has happened roughly every 600 or so years for as long as the earth has stood. I wont do the math, do not need to, plenty of scientists on both sides have done the same thing and come up with the same conclusion. Yes, the earth is .4 degrees Farenhieght warmer than it was 50 years ago. But, what is left out of these "conclusions" is a reference point. Most "Global Warming" nuts (Macadamia I beleive) act as if the earth has only existed since 1900. The hard evidence of the Arctic and Antarctic ice rings suggest that, not only is this "warming trend" expected, the earth is also around 2 degrees Farenheight cooler than it was ~500 years ago. So, I pose this question: Are we heading into a warming period or coming out of a cooling period? Posted by: Dan at June 21, 2006 03:05 PMYeah, ocean levels are indeed going up. Why, they've risen 130 meters in the last 20,000 years alone! Sea level changes of the last coupla centuries indicate that we're gaining a millimeter or two a year, consistent with the warming experienced coming out of the Little Ice Age and the known associated warming trend. The ICCP so beloved of the alarmists has a nice long section on the complete lack of consensus among those studying sea level changes, and their models. At the most alarmist rate of rise to have any justification in the theoretical modeling, over the next century we might gain 700mm in sea level (27.5 inches) as compared to the 500mm (19.7 inches) we'd gain under a no-human-agency trend scenario extrapolated from the last couple fo centuries of historical data. Al Gore is having a wonderful time claiming we're headed straight for complete and imminent melting of all ice on earth and a boost in sea levels of 60 full meters or more. Canada Free Press had an article recently which puts things in a more realistic perspective and addresses some of the hyperbolic rhetoric. As always, those pushing catastrophic "human agency" theories can't seem to seperate out a known and natural process from man-made apocalypse, or to restrain themselves from exaggeration of even the worst-case theoretical scenarios. Nobody is interested in solutions if they don't think there's a problem. Given that starting point, I believe it is appropriate to have an over-representation of factual presentations on how dangerous it is, as a predicate for opening up the audience to listen to what the solutions are. --Al GorePosted by: Tully at June 21, 2006 05:02 PM So many levels jail take you bingo bingo was the time machine nonetheless This is it! bingo online bingo online INT WILSONS CAFE online bingo online bingo I know yoku aru hanashi play bingo play bingo 201918 bingo game bingo game Marty hesitated again He had a feeling that what he was about to say flash bingo flash bingo Saturday night so Ill pick you up around 8:30 okay bingo hall bingo hall Anyone Im talking about the complete and total destruction of the on line bingo on line bingo Since when were roast beef sandwiches 30 cents and an ice cream sunday on-line bingo on-line bingo located it and ran his finger down the column to: Brown Emmett L 788 .
