June 05, 2006Gewg-veeda-zane campaign?Glenn Reynolds reports on grumpy gewgul users and suggests alternates, namely ask and dogpile. Since Rick has reported on our problems with gewgul and their combined unresponsiveness and inaccessibility in his attempts to get a decent answer, let alone solve the problem, I say "why not try an alt?" If gewgul is unresponsive, perhaps this is because they just can't hear us. We are apparently speaking the wrong language. Perhaps gewgul needs to be reminded that they were simply the first to do something well which is not, after all, rocket science. If ask or dogpile can do something as well as the now-lumbering levianthan that gewgul has become, I can break my inertia enough to at least give it a look-see. How about if everyone here who regularly uses gewgul gives ask or dogpile a one or two week trial, and reports on the results? Maybe we can start a "tame the beast" chain letter... I know that gewgul seems to have been getting better and better at trying to sell me something and less able to isolate genuine content and useful information. If it's not very hard to vote with our e-feet, why not try? Posted by Kranky Kritter at June 5, 2006 09:08 AMComments
I think I'll use Ask more from now on. You'll notice that the search box at the right now longer uses Google, since it had banned out blog for some reason (one possibility is that the use of the Google search box itself is what they didn't like, as I did customize it). The search box now is back to the Movable Type default search. But since I deleted posts before 2006 from the Movable Type database, leaving them as static pages, the search doesn't pick up entries before 2006 Posted by: Rick Heller at June 5, 2006 05:15 PM |
