May 24, 2006Mmmm, Irony....A.C.L.U. May Block Criticism by Its Board The American Civil Liberties Union is weighing new standards that would discourage its board members from publicly criticizing the organization's policies and internal administration.Posted by Tully at May 24, 2006 09:50 AM Comments
Good. Just like Congress should be forced to obey the employment and other laws it passes... maybe this will help them develop some sense. Posted by: PatHMV at May 24, 2006 10:23 AMTrying to think of something witty to say. I can't. The headline and article speaks for itself. Posted by: Jim M at May 24, 2006 11:26 AMThis doesn't bother me at all. The policy seems sensible, and I don't see a first amendment issue. Being a board member entails certain organizational responsibilites, and if you can't fulfill them, you should seek a different position. Employment-related speech constraints of at least several types are not unconstitutional Now if the ACLU national policy has been to take 1st-amendment issue with such policies when others have established them, then obviously they need to decide where they stand. If anyone decides to investigate that, this is a good time to notice that local ACLU chapters are prone to vary...as we all know civil liberties are a philosophical area where zeal often outpaces reason, and instances of such tend to appear in local ACLU chapters. I am not a member BTW. Posted by: bk at May 24, 2006 11:59 AMThe article was an interesting read. The antics of thier board meeting described in it reminds me alot more of a bunch of kindergartners bickering on a playground rather then a group of supposedly proffesional adults conducting serious business.
