Texas Declaring It's Independence?

Ron reports:

A new SurveyUSA/KEYE-TV poll shows Governor Rick Perry (R) continuing to hold a strong lead in his race for Governor. The results: Perry-39%, State Comptroller Carole Keeton Strayhorne (Independent)-25%, singer/author Kinky Friedman (Independent)-16%, former Congressman Chris Bell (D)-15%.

What do we know?

1. Races with strong and viable independent candidates are hard to poll.
2. Viable independent candidates, especially uknowns like Kinky Friedman, usually do better than their numbers suggest because unlikely voters go to the polls on election day. Remember, Jesse Ventura was way behind.

If I were Rick Perry, I'd be a little nervous.

Prediction: An independent will be elected Governor of Texas. "Why the hell not?"

I like Kinky's slogan.

"How hard could it be?"

On the blog front, WeekendPundit.com has endorsed Kinky, and offers some reasons why it's not just a vote against the other guys.

I've endorsed Kinky on my blog. I will have one regret if he wins though and thats not being able to see the head of the RNCs face when the final tally is announced.

On a side note, I think its interesting that the Democrat is in 4th and only registers 15% of the vote. The Republican and the Republican-cum-Indie are taking 64%. While the liberal-Indie and the Democrat are taking 31%. Even if Strayhorne wins, this is more indicative of the quick passing of the Texas Democrats who ran the place before GOV Bush started turning the tide in 1994.

Is it a sign of that or a sign of Chris Bell being a mediocre candidate and most Democrats choosing Strayhorn, who used to be an Austin-Democrat, or Kinky?

Kinky appeals to the native Texan mindset. Even a dope-suckin' cigar-smokin' hard-drinkin' Jewish musician mystery novelist is better than another Establishment Idiot of either party--if the dope-suckin' cigar-smokin' hard-drinkin' Jewish musician mystery novelist is a plain-speaking native Texan, and a buddy of Willie Nelson's.

"He's OUR dope-sucking cigar-smokin' Jewish musician mystery novelist!"

Hey, from the populist Texan angle, they've got a point. (It really is like a whole 'nother country...)
