Just A Rumor...

...but sources on the Hill are whispering that in the recent White House re-organizations, someone may have actually found the long-missing Veto Pen.

UPDATE 7:12 PM EDT: Bush threatens to use veto over spending bill

President George W. Bush yesterday threatened to use the first veto of his five-year presidency if the Senate refuses to cut back spending in an emergency bill to fund the war in Iraq and rebuilding from Hurricane Katrina.

Almost six hours ahead of the curve! My whisperers were right. But we still don't know if the pen has any ink in it. I remain skeptical.

Probably because it was mistakenly put in the box marked "Viagra".

I think it was under a sofa cushion in the Lincoln Bedroom. Or in the William Jefferson Clinton Presidential Condom Repository.

But hey, it's just a rumor. Even if they actually found it, the ink may have dried out by now.

May have found it in the reservoir of public opinion as it drainied to low levels and was found on the shores.

I don't see a veto coming. Unless some of the Dem's veterans' medi-care amendments get in.

I like how Sen. Gregg wants to cut some of the Army funding in the bill citing that Army operations don't belong in an emergency bill.

To me, the whole thing wreaks of fat. God, we spend too much money.

I wonder, does someone have to remind him from time to time, that he actually HAS a veto pen?

Posted by: Rafique Tucker at April 25, 2006 08:01 PM

He probably hasn't gotten to that part of the Constitution for Dummies book yet.

Posted by: Marcus at April 25, 2006 08:40 PM

My take is that it's not a matter of "reminding," but of making him aware that it exists at all.

Posted by: Tully at April 25, 2006 09:04 PM

Let's see, all the story elements are here....

Governor runs for President, promising as an "outsider", he'll clean up D.C.

Gov is elected (or selected). Tries to clean up D.C.

Congressional bulls tell him "Nothin' doin'."

Prez pulls out the Mighty Veto Pen.

And then....

If Congress is run by the opposition party, then there are lots of fun and exciting clashes between the Prez and the Congress. (See Reagan, Bush I, Clinton). If Congress is run by the Prez's own party, then Prez looks a tad delicate, as the Brits say. (See Carter, Clinton, W)

To quote Yogi Berra, "It's deja vu all over again."

Well, Bush I was neither a Governor nor an "outsider"-- occupying, perhaps, the most "insider" position of them all prior to his election to the White House.

Having said that, the recurring parallels that Jean brings up really are striking.

LOL.

Apt.

Posted by: Tully at April 25, 2006 10:24 PM

That's true, Bobby; I stand corrected. Thanks! Which makes Bush I's election all the more remarkable. How do you pose as an outsider (especially during scandal) when you're the No. 2 guy in the administration? Answer; very carefully.

Gore had the same problem, and he almost pulled it off. (Well, he did pull it off, but for the Supreme Court) Of course, he had a little easier time of it. It was hard to believe that Bush I had no role in Iran Contra, but it's easy to believe that Gore wasn't invited to a Clinton-Lewinski threesome. ;-)

Posted by: Blue Jean at April 25, 2006 10:25 PM

I'll believe this when I see it. Bush has no reason to veto as long as he isn't challenged on the signing statement mumbo-jumbo.

Posted by: JP at April 26, 2006 08:21 AM

Besides, Bush has _threatened_ to veto a fair number of bills. He just hasn't followed thru on any of his threats. (Follow-thru -- not a core competency of this administration....)

Want to bet that the pattern continues here?
