Bin Laden on Darfur

Bin Laden has a new tape out expressing his concern for Darfur

Regarding the situation in Sudan, bin Laden said, "I call on Mujahedin and their supporters, especially in Sudan and the Arab peninsula, to prepare for long war again the crusader plunderers in Western Sudan. Our goal is not defending the Khartoum government but to defend Islam, its land and its people.
"I urge holy warriors to be acquainted with the land and the tribes in Darfur. They should know the rainy season approaches and that will hamper their movement," he said.

Just as in Somalia, he is not concerned about the health and safety of his fellow Musilms, but is only concerned about the presence of non-Muslim troops in the area. They must be attacked, even if they are their for humanitarian reasons.

This fits in with my sense of Islamic radicals concerns for the Palestinians. The radicals are not concerned for their health and welfare, and wouldn't have the slightest concern if they were dying due to a famine that was an "act of God." It's a xenophobic reaction due to the presence of non-Muslims that stirs their passion.

"Defending Islam" by helping Arab Muslims slaughter non-Arab Muslims. What a guy.

Rick, it's almost as though you sound surprised! :-)

If the royals in Saudi Arabia and the other filthy-rich oil emirates would downgrade their decadent and ritzy life-style just an iota, they could help Palestine to prosper. But they don't, because they need a cause to hate the Israelis.

Anti-racism is a disease of us paynim. Annoying how it lets us build big armies to catch his buddies. Bwahaha!!

Posting from San Juan, Puerto Rico. Yesterday I was hoping to get off a comment from a nice beach on the SW end of the island, but it didn't happen.

Read Drezner on this. Apparently both Sudan and Hamas are disavowing Bin Laden's take. I think there's some credence to the view that part of OBL's motive here is to try to claim some spotlight and appear relevant despite the fact of his having been reduced to a fugitive taking refuge in Pakistani caves.

The problem for OBL is that while he's been running, Earth has kept turning, as have various islamic political and terrorist efforts, and OBL is apparently unable to play any sort of substantive active role. The question here is "how much is OBL really in charge of these days?"

Sure, his words are bound to carry some weight, but it seems plausible to me that his actual day-to-day relevance to what's going on in terroists hotspots has been limited quite a bit by his fugitive status. Sorry Osama, but there's not much honor among strongmen...

Just curious, but now that Madrid has been shown to be a home-grown operation, just where in the West has Al-Qaeda been active as of late?

I'll second Brian's take that this is an attempt from Bin Laden to appear relevant in a world which is rushing past him in his cave.

Today Iran announced its intention to send nuclear technology and know-how to Sudan. Interesting convergence between Bin Laden and the Mullahs. I am not the only one wondering: Is Iran just baiting the West to strike or are the Mullahs convinced the West will do nothing? I haven't heard Sudan or Hamas turning down Iranian offers.

I think the carnage in Iraq makes clear the minimal value radical Muslim groups give to the life of ordinary Iraqis. I don't think there were many US experts that before the invasion predicted the indiscriminant terrorism insurgents would unleash on fellow Muslims, often of the same sect.

On the bright side, Bin Laden's remarks can only further inflame the resentment of Black African's towards their radical Muslim neighbors. What's next, inspirational videos for Nigeria militants?
