A Century Ago Today...

...San Franciscans were learning to shake, rattle and roll.

Actually Tully San Franciscans already knew how to shake rattle and roll well before 1906 as there had been several large earthquakes earlier in SF's 49er history.

Just prior to the 1906 earthquake the fire chief, noting the past earthquakes and the vulnerable state of the city to widespread fire, pleaded with the mayor to get some of his people up to speed on demolition techniques to make fuel breaks with dynamite in case if fires raged through the city.

Sad to say, when the fires were breaking out after the quake, they desperately got some expert who was also an expert at getting very drunk, thereby setting off about 5 dozen more fires.

Right now the city has a lot of redundant water systems and cisterns in case of the next Big one.
There's also a lot of citizens trained in First Aid, fire fighting assistance, etc. The local water utilities are setting up other ways to deliver water to neighborhoods. A lot of houses are retrofitted and will be standing after a major quake so it doesn't make sense to move these people unless absolutely necessary.
How big the next one(s)though is up to conjecture. While large earthquakes are "normal", the ones the size of the 1906 aren't as normal.

I hope it stays that way.

FYI, we've all been told that FEMA has nada for us. A large chunk of our National Guard is overseas too.
It figures. During the end of the Clinton administration there were 3 scenarios that were deemed important for FEMA to start planning for.
Large scale terrorist attack, major hurricane and broken levees around LA, and major earthquakes in SF or Los Angeles. As they are batting 0-2, haven't really replaced the personnel that have already screwed up, none of us are expecting any significant, meaningful Fed help for at least a week.

So I have my week and a half of supplies already and will add to that in the coming months. Try to make it a 2-3 week supply for water. I have everything else but I need to build a secure locker for the water so it can survive a building collapse. My house is in an area id's as prone to "very violent shaking" if/when the Hayward Fault slips..
