April 17, 2006Your European CityHarper's Mews has a new URL. and posts a link to this quiz: What European city do you belong in? Apparently, I belong in Dublin too. I've never been there. Posted by Rick Heller at April 17, 2006 11:00 AMComments
Me, too. And I didn't even answer "beer." (But it was hard not to.) ***You Belong in Dublin***
Egads, we're all Irish! Posted by: Tully at April 17, 2006 12:04 PMI did about 10 times by switching a few answers in different combos when more than one felt right. I kept alternating bewteen Paris, Amsterdam and Milan. I was hoping Barcelona would pop up. It may not have even been a choice. I spent about 8 months during school there and thought it was the most perfect city. It combined commerce, climate, cosmo-style, culture, hominess, some diversity and BEACHES better than anywhere else. It's kinda like Milan or London transported to a warm Mediterranean location and keeping the better parts of both. AAAHHH nostalgia! Posted by: John at April 17, 2006 12:27 PMI belong in London. I knew it!! Posted by: JP at April 18, 2006 08:33 AMWhere the hell did this survey come up with its methodology. You Belong in AmsterdamYes, this moderate Christian belongs in the city of legal dope (I haven't smoked it since college), euthanasia and lots a sex. Maybe the problem was that the choices of American cities I would prefer to live in was too limited?! Go Orange? Posted by: c3 at April 18, 2006 10:02 PMWhew... thanks, Chris! I wasn't going to admit that mine said Amsterdam, too. The one time I had an opportunity to go there (weekend trip from the south of France with fellow law students), I passed it up. It may be the last city in the world (well, the developed world, anyway) that I want to go visit, much less live there. Posted by: PatHMV at April 19, 2006 12:47 AMDon't be ashamed, fellas, I got amsterdam too. But I was happy. I've been to amsterdam, twice. But I behaved myself both times. It's actually quite nice. I wanted a city that was relaxing, friendly, and intellectual. And although certain vices are legal, it's out in the open and under control. That's better than many of our cities. Besides, I'm pretty sure that their teen pregnancy and STD rates are much lower. And maybe even serious drug use. And I think it's pretty clear that weed is no worse than alcohol. And think of all the wife-beating and DUI's that causes. I don't hear that often, if ever, of weed-induced abuse. America is simultaneously prudish and libertine. After all, we have a huge porn industry along with a mix of very conservative views. I actually think we'd be a more virtuous, and even more restrained nation if we actually relaxed a little. Didn't Pat bring up the issue of binge drinking when we discussed the drinking age? Americans have a binge drinking problem -- and a girls gone wild problem -- but I don't think the French do. And this strong endorsement of Amsterdam comes from a total puritan. Just ask Brian! I don't drink or smoke and I view sweets with a forbidding and disapproving eye. :) Posted by: Adam at April 19, 2006 05:45 AMAdam, "I actually think we'd be a more virtuous, and even more restrained nation if we actually relaxed a little."
