MAP-stravaganza

View the world from 56 different perspectives

Very cool. Takes a while to wrap your head around the way graphic representation is used to transmit information about trends, but worth it. Go round the world 56 times in a day....

Just one question, Brian: Does one have better odds of long-term survival sticking with one's first choice of country, or switching to another? lol

Did you ever see the drawing of the human body based on tactile perception in a general psych book? It's a guy will huge lips, hands and genitals. Some of the maps give you the same distorted, psychedelic impression.

homunculus.here and here are a couple Posted by: c3 at March 29, 2006 10:41 PM

Actually, WHQ, if you look at the pics, the genitals are actually quite small. Those maps correspond to area of cortex (sensory or motor) which in turn correspond to fine sensory discrimination or motor abilities, not pleasure. That's more a subcortical thing. So really it's not that surprising that not much of cortex is devoted to genitalia if you think about it.

Then my memory is flawed. I hadn't seen the drawing since the early nineties.

LOL! That's fine, WHQ. Well, the homunculus DOES have large hands . . . .

To follow up on Adam's comment, the hands do such precise movements and functions, it take a bigger "operating system". The genitals have a much simpler task. Little need for a "DOS upgrade"
