Purging Old Posts

What I plan to do over the weekend is to delete most of the old posts from the Centerfield blog. That is, I will be purging them from the database. I've created a copy of all the posts, so after purging them, I'll be able to restore them from the backup. But this means they'll be frozen in time, and will be out of the database, and will no longer be dynamically rebuilt. Links to them should still work (but they may be missing for a day or so).

This will make the blog more efficient, and I hope will help fight spam.

Does anyone have any concerns?

As long as the old links still work, and Google still indexes them, I'm fine. Do you think that's what caused the problems earlier this week?

I think the problem earlier this week was an attack, but having 3000 blog posts in the database makes it easier to attack.

I will continue to have links from the blogs home page to each months archive, and then from each months archive to the individual posts, so Google should be okay with it.

Have you considered instead upgrading to MT 3.x and making the archives into dynamic templates? That would leave the posts in the database (and capable of being updated) without killing rebuild performance.

Jeff,

I didn't know about that. However, I'm halfway through the purge process, so I'll keep at it. Thanks for the suggestion.
