March 08, 2006Rock Lobster?There are more things in heaven and earth, Horatio, Than are dreamt of in your philosophy.Scientists have discovered the hairy lobster. Kiwa hirsuta is a white, blind, 6 inch long crustacean... with big lobster claws covered with "sinuous, hair-like strands". It's so different, they've assigned it to a whole new family of organisms. With long, flowing "hair" like that, though, they should have called it "80s Rockstaricus"! (Please be sure and click on the small picture shown on the BBC for a larger version). Is it good eating? Saw that this am. If it proves to be delicious, this may serve as a permanent safeguard against extinction. It sure looks like you can boil it, crack it open, and extract a big tail piece to dip in butter. The big one inquiring minds want to know about is "what color does it turn when you boil it?"
