March 07, 2006Election 2006: Round OneThe primaries in Texas today offer us a glimpse of upcoming events. A prime race to watch is the grudge match between incumbent Henry Cuellar and former incumbent Ciro Rodriguez for the Democratic nomination to the Texas 28th Congressional District. That a Democrat will win the seat in November is certain by the demographics. (The Republicans are so sure that they guaranteed it by not running anyone.) The two squared off in the 2004 primary and by a hair Cuellar unseated Rodriguez, who began his non-stop campaign to get "his" seat back. Cuellar is already an outcast with the Democratic left and the party leadership for his mainstream views, consistent centrism, and willingness to deal with the Evil Republicans to get things done on behalf of his district. Not surprisingly, the Democratic left has moved in heavily to support Rodriguez. He's been endorsed by John Kerry and Jack Murtha, numerous unions, People for the American Way, Democracy For America (the Dean PAC), and by MoveOn.org, which has been sending out email fundraising appeals for him. And he led Cuellar in fundraising coming into the home stretch. But Southwest Texas Dems are a different species than national Dems. My pick: Cuellar by 4 points. Sadly, Tom DeLay looks to be a lock to win his primary slot again. UPDATE: Ex-male prostitute and former Mary Kay salesman Tom Malin remains ever hopeful in his Dallas primary race, despite having lost his major endorsements and running for a seat that the Dems have no chance at all of winning in November. (Have fun with it, Tom. If nothing else, you've been entertaining, and shown lots of personal strength and courage. ) Posted by Tully at March 7, 2006 03:13 PMComments
It amazes me that such a popular blogger who generally represents the party of tolerance and diversity is leading the attack on the "ex-gay prostitute", and treating his sexual orientation and his past as being the most important component of his campaign. Not that I'm ever surprised when the Wonkette indulges in toilet humor, but seriously, I thought Democrats were the party of forgiveness and tolerance. And Malin hasn't even commited the sin of supporting Republican causes, which is what is usually required before the Democrat's guns are brought to bear full-bore on one of their own. Posted by: PatHMV at March 7, 2006 03:45 PMPat, The new "Wonkette" is not "Wonkette." Anna Marie is gone and it's a new guy now who actually caused a stir in the gay community when he took over. Apparently, his old blog was somewhat homophobic. (Oh, and btw, he doesn't hold a candle to Anna Marie.) Posted by: AR at March 7, 2006 06:50 PMThanks for the update, Abel. I vaguely knew that Anna Marie had moved on and been replaced as the "Wonkette". But let me get this straight (so to speak)... a heterosexual, slightly homophobic male blogger now blogs under the title "Wonkette"? It's a whacky, whacky world we live in. I hope the gay community gives him plenty of grief over this one. Posted by: PatHMV at March 7, 2006 07:00 PMSome folks are positive that one vote can make a difference. Absentee ballot--priceless. Posted by: PatHMV at March 7, 2006 07:33 PMNaw, that's just clueless Washington editors. It's like that all the time in the plains. Posted by: Tully at March 7, 2006 07:34 PMCuellar won by considerably more than four. The early returns from San Antonio went heavily to Rodriguez, but when Laredo weighed in it swung hard the other way, and Cuellar walked home with a 12 point win. Worth noting--since there is no challenge in the fall, this was it. Cuellar goes back to the US Congress with a mere 23,546 votes. Who says a few votes don't matter? Malin lost. Posted by: Tully at March 8, 2006 08:36 AMSo Tom Matlin, an ex male-prostitute is runing in the primary against another openly gay man. Tom Franklin, another openly gay man is running in another Texas Democratic primary. And Glenn Maxey, another openly gay man, is the favorite to win the Democratic State Party chair. I don't imagine this many openly gay men run in moderate-liberal states, much less conservative ones like Texas. Posted by: Dustin R. Ridgeway at March 8, 2006 08:39 AM |
