More Florida Computerized Voting Anomalies

Florida has been shown to have more e-vote consistency problems (via slashdot).

Of course, what's needed here are backup printed ballots, that are randomly checked on the precinct level, and used in case of any inconsistencies being spotted. We read of election workers often ignoring e-vote glitches, presumably because they have no backup to check. Would this have happened?

This isn't just about fraud - all human-made complex systems (which software is) have bugs. The only way we can work those bugs out is by having a testing regime whenever they're used, and having a way to fall back on other systems, like hand-counting machine-countable ballots. There's a long-time mailing list on the subject of inappropriate overtrust of computer systems, RISKS. Here's a pointer to search results for elections.

It is, by the way, possible to write provably true software. It's at least an order of magnitude harder than normal software development, and of course I have yet to read of any e-vote vendor saying a word about this possibility.

It's nice to see these problems staying in the news.

Too bad it is almost 100% off the radar of the regular media. Florida does not even have an approved touchscreen system that has a paper ballot option. Add to this that the average voluntary poll worker in Florida is usually over 60 and not computer savy, touch screen voting is easily set up to be screwed up.

And you won't find any of us from the software industry (except maybe from the voting machine vendors, and not even all of them) who have any faith in these machines getting it right. None, zip, zero. We've seen too much new software to believe any differently.

A few paranoids suspect the voting machine companies of conspiring to rig the elections. But the rest of us just know from experience that:
a) the results will be unreliable initially, and
b) the only way to improve their reliability is to have a way (i.e. paper copies printed out at the time) to check on the reliability of the results.
Of course, since the results are basically a binary who-got-elected, they may be "right" even with substantial errors in the actual vote counts. But that's not the same as reliable results by any reasonable definition.
