Lib Dems To The Left

With Tony Blair's Labour Party occupying the centre of British politics, the formerly centrist Liberal Democrat Party will shift to the left of Labour, if the frontrunner for its leadership wins. As I understand it, there is more of a class than ideological difference between the Liberal Democrats and Labour. Labour of course has a working class base, whereas the Liberal Democrats appeal to lifestyle liberals who may be fiscally conservative. The shift in the offing means they may loosen the purse strings to develop a more consistent left-of-center image.

"Lifestyle liberals" is a nice phrase. Now I'm off to Starbucks to get a cappucino.
