Abramoff Probe

Sources familiar with the investigation say that the first-tier Congressional targets of the investigation include members of both parties.

Abramoff-linked probe focuses on 5 lawmakers*

Law-enforcement authorities and others said the investigation's opening phase is scrutinizing Sens. Conrad Burns, Montana Republican; Byron L. Dorgan, North Dakota Democrat; and Minority Leader Harry Reid, Nevada Democrat, along with Reps. J.D. Hayworth, Arizona Republican, and Bob Ney, Ohio Republican.

"Scrutinizing" is not the same thing as being targeted, of course. Also on the list is at least one former DeLay staffer. And one has to wonder when Mrs. DeLay's sweetheart employment will be explained.

Best "deer frozen in the headlights" suspect remain Bob Ney (R-OH) at this point, with many wandering about that lovely Scottish golf trip Mr. Ney took at Abramoff's expense. And we all wonder what Abramoff associate Michael Scanlon, who has already cut a deal, is saying about his other former employer, Mr. DeLay.

[*--this story appears as an original report in the Washington Times. As with that other paper named "Times," it is wise to consider the source, obtain verification, and audit for potential ideological bias in the reporting.]

Funny. That's not what Rich Lowry says.

Tully's right that it is a bi-partisan problem, but I'm with Jean and Rich Lowry that it is and will remain a Republican scandal, although how bad it hurts will depend on how they react to it.

P.S. Jean, I'm glad to see you in support of that Rich Lowry column:

The behavior of the right in this matter contrasts sharply with the left's lickspittle loyalty to Bill Clinton, whose maintenance in power many liberals put above any of their principles.

Hmmm... The Washington Times or Rich Lowry... I will be waiting for better info.

This is a systemic problem people, not a partisan one. If the Democrats were in charge, we'd be talking about their scandal.

It's a "Republican scandal" in the same sense that the House Banking scandal was a "Democrat scandal." Namely, being in the majority, the GOP will take a bigger hit.

But as I've said before, given the numbers it's hard for the Dems to crow about it all that much. Both parties were feeding deep in the trough. "Hey, you got more bribe money than we did!" Heh.

I've seen some Dems criticize the leadership for not jumping on this much harder, but I think the Dems are waiting to be sure that Abramoff isn't going to fink out one or more of theirs, and be sure that more than Bob Ney and DeLay get whacked on the GOP side, before they start kicking that can too hard. Reid in particular has good reason to wait and see. No one really knows yet what Abramoff is saying behind closed doors, and until a fairly dependable account leaks, no one wants to jump too soon.

Plus, William Jefferson is going to be indicted long before anybody associated with Abramoff (except maybe Ney).
