My wish for the new year is that the DLC and the Republican Main Street Partnership will join together to create an influential centrist organization able to get moderate candidates elected and centrist policies enacted? This could be an antidote to the control of the radical wings of both parties. I heard a commentator the other day say that conditions are riper than they've been in a very long time for a centrist third-party to emerge. What I would love to see would be for a bold group of moderate Dems and GOPers already in Congress split off and have a go at forging a new party kinda along the lines of what Sharon has done in Israel. Posted by: Kevin at January 1, 2006 02:16 PMNow this is really funny. Several major news outlet reported that “Narnia had walked out of the World Trade Organization talks in Hong Kong because it was fed up with being bullied by the US and Europe. “ Posted by: Bob J Young at January 1, 2006 02:39 PMI love it! And in other news, Mordor has defied the Council of the Wise in developing banned weapons of myth destruction. The Council voted 8 to 1 in favor of increased sanctions against the Barrad-Dur regime, with Saruman the White authoring the minority opinion.... Posted by: Tully at January 1, 2006 03:00 PMAnd was is just me, or did 2005 seems just a teeny bit longer than most years? Posted by: Tully at January 1, 2006 03:03 PMNOW the Chiefs are out of the playoffs. The Chiefs rolled right over Cincinnati 37-3, but Pittsburgh refused to lie down for the Lions. The Steelers claim the last AFC wild-card playoff berth, having the tie-breakers on their side. Fittingly enough, they get to play Cincinnati in round one. Posted by: Tully at January 1, 2006 04:18 PMHere's the full WaPo article on the DeLay-Abramoff The U.S. Family Network, a public advocacy group that operated in the 1990s with close ties to Rep. Tom DeLay and claimed to be a nationwide grass-roots organization, was funded almost entirely by corporations linked to embattled lobbyist Jack Abramoff, according to tax records and former associates of the group. During its five-year existence, the U.S. Family Network raised $2.5 million but kept its donor list secret. The list, obtained by The Washington Post, shows that $1 million of its revenue came in a single 1998 check from a now-defunct London law firm whose former partners would not identify the money's origins. ... So it won't be as boring over the next few months in Congress as I thought. Politicians on both sides of the aisle have been madly scrambling to return donations....
