Slouching Towards Bethlehem--the Undying pre-Xmas Open Thread

In darkest R'lyeh, dead Cthulhu lies dreaming....

Well, hey, it can't all be good!

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Call_of_Ktulu

"The Call of Ktulu" is an instrumental song by the metal band Metallica, inspired by the writings of H. P. Lovecraft, particularly The Call of Cthulhu. It appeared on the band's second album, Ride the Lightning in 1984 and was written by James Hetfield, Lars Ulrich, Cliff Burton, and Dave Mustaine. It was Metallica's second recorded instrumental, and first in which the entire band played together. In addition, The Call of Ktulu contains a recorded bass lead by Cliff Burton occuring between 1:30 and 3:20 in the song. As is common with some of Cliff's bass parts, in The Call of Ktulu his bass playing is often mistaken for an electric guitar.

This is one of the few Metallica songs to have been largely written by lead guitarist Dave Mustaine, who went on to form rival band Megadeth in 1983 after being fired from Metallica earlier that year. The song was originally entitled "When Hell Freezes Over." Late bassist Cliff Burton was a huge Lovecraft fan and it is likely he was responsible for changing the name of the song.

When I juxtaposed Yeats with Lovecraft for Xmas, I really wasn't expecting Metallica to join the parade. But then, I never was a metalhead.

Fits right in, though.

Meanwhile, CNN reports on the alarming discovery of rings around Uranus.

Moons as well, but we already knew about moons around our anuses, right?

Sorry, I couldn't resist this.

Had the privilege of being forced to have a root canal (my first) today and can't have the crown completed until after Christmas. So much for overeating this year! Life (thanks to Vicodin) is great...lol.

Yikes! Profound sympathies. I had a wisdom tooth extraction one December, thought I'd be fine for XMas dinner, but got "dry socket." For nearly two weeks there was no such thing as solid food and there was no possibly adequate level of medication short of "comatose."
