Political earthquake in Israel

Story.

JERUSALEM (CNN) -- In what some observers are calling a "huge political earthquake" for Israel, Prime Minister Ariel Sharon has resigned from the right-wing Likud party he helped found -- the next step in his plan to form a new center party. . .

After resigning, Sharon met with potential members of his new party, which would be called the National Responsibility Party.

Obviously, the successful establishment of a new party is much easier to accomplish in a parliamentary system, but I like the precedent as well as the new party's name.

Given the ongoing talks with the Palestinians, it's a really good sign that Sharon is moving towards the middle, and swinging his weight on the way.

I'm jealous. Any chance this might inspire, say, McCain and Lieberman?

Or both?

It's very interesting that Sharon is doing this. Remember his reputation when he first took office. He was a hawk's hawk. Remember how the left vilified him for supposedly precipitating the most recent intifadah by visiting a particular historic site?

Given his history, I have to believe that he is only taking these steps towards peace because he has seen something which forced him to change his mind about the possibility for a stable peace with the Palestinians. Most of the right wing bloggers have turned against Sharon and largely ignored their "attaboys" at Sharon's security measures. But one need not condemn his stern security measures in order to be hopeful of these new developments. Sharon is no pansy, and he has well-proven his devotion to Isreali security needs. If he says these new steps will not make Isreal less safe and will help the cause of peace, then I think it would be prudent to trust his judgment for now.
